Application filed September 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER F. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prentice, in the county of Price and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful l/Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a wrench, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the movable jaw of the wrench may be ad vanced rapidly into approximate position with respect to the fixed jaw of the wrench, and, subsequently, be adjusted with respect to the fixed jaw. Another object of the in vention is to provide novel means whereby the movable jaw may be held in fixed position at the will of an operator.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally structurally, devices of the type described, and to enhance the utility thereof.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the de tails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 8 is an elevation wherein the wrench is viewed edgewise; Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 01" Figure 1; Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 1; Figure 7 is a section on the line 77 of Figure 1; Figure 8 is a sec tion on the line 8-8 of Figure 1; Figure 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Figure 1 parts being omitted; Figure 10 is a transverse section showing the lever held with respect to the shank of the wrench.
The wrench forming the subject matter of this application includes a shank provided at one end with a screw driver 2 and provided at its opposite end with a trans verse fixed jaw 3 having teeth 4. An angular cutter 5 is attached by a securing element 6 to the fixed jaw 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, 1922.
Serial No. 497,458.
A rider 7 is mounted for reciprocation on the shank 1 and is U-shape'd in cross section, excepting at one end, where the rider terminates in a sleeve 70 surrounding the shank 1. The rider 7 includes a loop shap'ed mov able jaw 8 having teeth 9 cooperating with the teeth 1 of the fixed jaw 3. In one end of the jaw 8 a filler 10 is disposed, as shown in Figure 6, the filler being held in place by a securing element 11, retaining an angular cutter 12 adapted to cooperate with the cutter 5 of the fixed jaw 8.-;On one edge, the rider 7 is supplied with a rack 14. Studs 15 project from the shank 1 and retain an extension block 16, nuts 17 being threaded on the studs, for the purpose of holding the block 16 in place.
The numeral 18 marksa lever which is U-shaped in cross section, the lever having a nail puller 19 at its free end. The lever 18 is mounted to swing on a pivot element 20 carried by the part 16 of the shank 1. The lever 18 is provided with teeth 21 adapted to cooperate with the rack 14 of the rider 7. The rider 7 is provided with openings 22, adapted to be brought into registration with corresponding openings 23 in the shank 1.
A pin 24 is mounted in the shank; 1 and is supplied at one end with an eye25. In the other end of the pin 24 there is a seat 26. A flexible element 27, such as a chain, is engaged with the eye 25. On the free end of the chain 27 is located a retainer 28 in the form of a pin, having an eye 29 receiving one end of the chain 27. The rider 7 has alined openings 30 adapted to be brought into and out of registration with openings 31 in the shank. A holder 32 is journaled for rotation in the shank 1 and has a flattened end 33 provided with notches 34.
In practical operation, the lever 18 may be swung on its fulcrum 20 to dispose the teeth 21 of the lever out of engagement with the rack 14: on the rider 7 Then, the rider 7 may be shifted rapidly, by hand, to any desired position. The lever 18 then is swung to bring its teeth 21 into engagement with the rack 14 on the rider, and by swinging the lever 18 toward the shank 1, a further and adjusted'movement of the rider may be c the teeth 9 and 4, or to effect a cutting operation between the parts and 12. Further, a round object oi any kind, inserted into one of the openings 22 of the rider 7 and into the corresponding opening 23 of the shank 1 may be held. Owing to the fact that the openings 23 in the shank 1 are threaded, they may be used for restoring distorted threads on a bolt or the like.
Should it be desired to hold the rider 7 in any fixed position, the retainer or pin 28 is inserted into the alined openings 30 of the rider and into one of the openings 31 of the shank 1, as shown in Figure '1. In order to dispose the chain 27 in an outof-the-way position, longitudinally of the shank 1 oi. the wrench, one link of the chain is passed over the flattened end 33 of the holder 32. The holder 32 then is rotated, until the side portions of the link of the chain are engaged in the notches 34 as shown in Figure 4. If desired, the chain 27 may be passed around the lever- 18, as shown in Figure in order to preventthe lever from moving, one link of the chain being engaged in the seat 26 of the pin 24.
What is claimed is 1. A tool of the class described, comprising a shank having a fixed jaw; a rider mounted to reciprocateon the shank and having a rack, the rider including a loop-shaped jaw within which the shank is located; a filler in the jaw of the rider and located between one end of said jaw and the shank; a cutter on the of the rider and cooperating with the fixedjaw; a securing element connecting both the cutter and the filler to the jaw ofthe rider; and a lever fulcrumed on the shank and engaged with the rack of the rider. j
2. Ina device of the class described, a
shank having a fixed jaw; a rider slidable upon the shank and including a movable jaw cooperating with the fixed jaw, the rider having a rack; an extension member; a lever fulcrumed on the extension member and having means for engaging the rack; and means for mounting the extension member on the shanlgrfor adjustment toward and away from the shank, thereby to secure an adjustment between the lever and the rack.
In a device of the class described a shank having a fixed jaw; a rider slidable on the shank and having a movable jaw coacting with the fixed jaw; a lever fulcrumed on the shank and engaged operatively with the rider; a flexible element secured to the shank; a retainer carried by the flexible element, the rider and the shank having openings for thelreception of the retainer; and means on the shank for engaging the intermediate portion of the flexible element releasably. I V
4. In a device of the class described, a shank having a fixed jaw; a rider slidable on the shank and having a movable jaw ooacting with the fixed aw a lever fulcrumed on the shank and engaged operatively with the rider; a flexible elementsecured tothe shank; means for connecting the flexible ele-. ment releasably to the shank when the flexible element is looped around the lever; and means carried by the flexible element for engaging the shank and the rider to prevent movement of therider on the shank.
v In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
P PETER F. ANDERSON.
