Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,085, dated August 26, 1873 application filed March 29, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EUGENE CROUGH- WELL, AUGUSTUS TILLMAN, and EDWARD L. VANDERBURG, all of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain Improvements in Harness, designated as Back-Band Top and Loop Attachments, of which the following is a specificat1on:

Our invention relates to back-band tops and loops for harness use, constructed of short straight or curved metallic rods, flattened at one end for attachment to the terrets, and provided with adjustable rings at the other for the leather bands 5 also, loose or solid metallic loops, with screw-and-nut attachments for preserving the same in their places, in such manner that these band-tops, placed in their usual position, provided with these ring ends, which screw into them for holding the leather bands, shall be secured, at the top, by the terrets, and below either by loops forming parts of these rods or by loose metallic ones with screw-and-nut attachments; the object of our invention being to make such improved back-band tops adjustable to the harness or leather bands, so that the several parts can be readily disengaged without inconvenience in the adjustment andwithout injury to those parts; also, to insure greater strength and durability from the introduction of the screwand-nut attachments provided on the loops.

Figure 1 represents a horse fitted with a harness provided with attachments embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of part of a saddle fitted with back-band tops with ring attachment and adjustable loop embodying our invention. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of loop L, embodying our invention. Figs. 5 and 6 are front and side views, respectively, of the metallic back-bandv top with adjustable ring embodying our invention. Fig. 7 is a side view of back-band top and loop attachment in one piece, the loop attachment being provided with screw-shank and adjustable nut. Fig. 8 is a front view of ring attachment R for the leather bands, shown detached from the backband top I.

J J is the jockey; K, the saddle-tree; F, the saddle-flap and T, one of the terret-rings, all of which are constructed in the usual manner adopted in the manufacture of such articles. I is one of the backhand tops, which consists of a wire rod, i, with flattened head r, pierced with a hole, It, for the screw m of the terret T to pass through, in order to secure it in its place between the jockey and saddle-flaps, and terminating in a ring, R, which screws into it by means of the screw 0. To this ring R the leather bandB is fastened, and thus made capable of swinging to and fro without injury to its attachments. Just above this ring R a loop, L, made of any suitable metal, secures the portion i of this backband top in position below, while the terret T secures it from above.

This loop L may be a loose ring, a, with screw-spindle b, for screwing into a rear plate, 10, or may form part of the body of the rod t, with screw 11 and nut attachment a.

By this arrangement of ring R, provided with screw 0, the leather band B, with this ring, can be adjusted without removing the other portions of the back-band top; also, the loop L, either loose or part of the bandtop provided with screw 12 and .plate p or nut 02, admits of the detachment of itself, or the back-band top, or the' saddle-flap from both, without injury to the several parts composing this portion of the saddle; and this can be effected with more convenience than in any other form of saddle, so that, should it be worn from use, or any other change be necessary from this or any other cause, the back band top can be readily removed, or its several portions, as may be required.

We do not claim the back-band top I, with metallic body 2' and flattened head 1" pierced for the terret-ring T, as we are aware that these parts are not new, having been patented in the United States by Leonard & Leonard, Patent No. 118,137 but What we claim as our invention is-- The back band top and loop attachments, expressed as follows: The metallic loop L, either loose or forming part of the top I, provided with screw b and plate 19 or nut n, to-

gether with the adjustable ring R, in connec tion with the back-band top 1, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
