To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, LYBERAT HnwiLniz, a citizen ofthe Swiss Confederation, residing at Goldau, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Railway aggage or General-Goods Car, for which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved `railway baggage or general goods car destined for the transport of goods, cattle and horses.` l
The primary object of t-he invention is to provide self-locking means to secure the skid in its position for use.
Another object consists in providing such means for locking the skid which are simple in construction and easy to be actuated even in the dark and by uneXperienced operators.
Other objects of the invention relate to the provision of minor parts cooperating with the elements above noted and to details of construction all of which will vbe more clearly set forth in the following specification.
kllith the above objects in View the invention resides in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the claims appended hereto.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have shown the same in the drawings by way of an example.

Inthe drawings 1 denotes the floor of a goods car which is provided with two sliding side doors 2 in the well known manner. On the lower side of the floor 1 in line with the side doors 2 there are two horizontal guide-ways il, 5 arranged parallel to each other-'transverse to the car and firmly fiXedi to the beams 12 of the car frame. Each guide-way is providedat each end with a guide piece 6. On the guide-ways t,r 5 and in horizontal groovesof the pieces 6, in line with the lsaid guide-ways 4:, 5 run rollers 7 arranged at thefour corners of a movable skid 8. The skid 8 comprises an iron frame covered by wooden boards, it is strongly built and its length corresponds to the breadth of the car. VTo secure the skid in its position below the Hoor 1 I arrange two hooks 9, 10 of unequal length both hooks being fixed toa common shaftll vwhich is journalled in the beams 12 of the car-frame. On each side of the car the shaft'l-jl4 is vprovided with a handle 15 by means of -which the hooks` 9, 10 may be brought out of engagement with the ledges 17 ofthe skid 8.
The ledges 17 are parallel with each otherV and their upper surfaces are inclined downwardly toward .the ends of the skid 8. To limit the movement of the sliaft 11 I larrange two abutments 14 (Fig. on the beam`12 between which an arm 16 of the shaftll plays. The hooks 9, 10 are held and brought in engagement with the skid 8 by a spring 53, they slide over the ledges 17 when the skid 8 is moved on its guide-ways 4f, 5;

double-armed lever which is journalled on a pivot 22. One arm 23, forming a tongue rojects into the horizontal groove and forms a part o-f the guide groove for the rollers 7, the other arm 21 of the lever is pro-y vided with a slot 24 into which the end 26 of av second double-armed lever p-rojects. The lever 26, 28 is rotatablyinounted in the guide piece 6 and projects with a curved arm 2,8 in thecvpath of the skid 8. vIf the skid 8 rests beneath the floor 1 (Fig. 5) the arm 28 abuts against the lower side of the skid 8 and the switch 2O assumes the position as shown in Fig. 4. The tongue 23 takes the position shown in which it guides the hind roller .7 into the branched-ofi:1 groove 18. The skid 8 resting on arm 28 secures the tongue 23 in its position. If the skid 8 is withdrawn into its position for use shown in Fig.` 2 by dotted lines, the rollers 7 `at the fore part of the skid leave the pieces y6 the rollers 7 at the hind end pass into the grooves 18 and ascend until they bear against abutments 30 resting on springs in the front partl 32 of the guide pieces 6. As soon as the skid 8 leaves the arm 28 the tongue 23 swings V upwards, the weight of the parts'21, 26 exceeding that of the; parts 23, 28. To lockthe `sk1d 8 in the loading position I provideon Veach piece'6 a double armed lever 39, 40 rotatably mounted in said piece 6 by means of a bolt 41. The arm 39 projects into the path of the roller 7 in the groove 19 and is held in the position shown in Fig. 4 by means ofthe weighted arm 40. A third arm 45 is fastened to the Vbolt 41 against which a lock bolt 43 abuts. The bolts 43 onV each side of the car are fixed to a rod44 journalled in bearings and provided at each end with a handle 42. In the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the bolts 43 lock the levers 39, 40 in the position shown and theskid 8 is secured in its position. To free the skid 8 the handles 42 are turned in such a manner thatthe arm 39 leaves the groove 19. By moving the skid 8 in its position for use it is automatically secured against accidental displacement when loading or unloading they car. To bring the skid back into itsY posi tion below the Hoor 1 the arms 39 are turned out of the way of the rollers 7 by rotatingv the rod 44 and the skid 8 is moved against the car. The rollers 7 on the hind or upper part of the skid 8 descend the groove 18 and theskid may be pushed below the floor. Y The rollers 7 may pass the switch 20 at theoplposite car side the tongue 23 being in its uppermost position (see Fig. 4). skid y8 is moved into the guides 4,75 the hooks 9, 10 slide on the ledge 17 until they fall over the .hind end thereof. The skid 8isy now secured in its proper position the ends? of it projecting just far enough from the sidesV of the car to be used as a second tread. While the pieces 6 facilitate the moving of the skid 8.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the skid may be withdrawn from any side of the car, in no position it loses the connection with the car and in no way interferes with the general arrangement and design of the Caf.
It frequently happens that the train moves somewhat whilst the loading or unloading I provide therefor rollers 51 on the small sides of the skid in order that the latter may easily follow the car preventing thereby damage. Various details of construction for instance the means for locking the skid in its position etc. may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.V
Although I have described the preferred form of construction I wish it understood that various details of construction may be changed without departing from the spirit of the invention. j y v What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is: v 1.
