IMPROVEMENT IN PLES FQR VEHICLES.

Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. ldl, dated August 19, 1873; application filed June 14, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY SCHMIDT, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trotting-Bar, of which the following is a specification:

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention has for its object to furnish a bar, neat, simple, tasteful, and ornamental in appearance, for connecting the horsesof a team, to keep them head and head with each other when traveling, and which, should one of the horses stumble, will assist him in recovering himself. The invention consists in `placed a sleeve, E, upon the'upper side of which is formed a slot or groove to receive a tongue, F, formed upon the upper side ofthe parts A B, so that the sleeves E may be free to slide longitudinally, but cannot turn. The

outward movement of the sleeve E is stopped by the knob D, and its inward movement is limited by a collar, G, formed upon the parts A B of the bar at a little distance from their inner ends. To the lower side of each of the sleeves E is swiveled a bow, II, the ends of which are secured to the harness-saddle by the screws that secure the saddle-tree and pad to each other. To the upper side of the sleeves E are attached short bars I, to the. ends of which are attached rings to receive the reins. To the center of the bars I is attached an ornamental device, J, which may be so formed as to receive and hold the check-rein. To the center of the double'nut G is attached an ornament, K, which may be the coat of arms of the ow'ner, or any other ornamental device.

In Winter the ornament K may be replaced with a set of Russian bells.

In 4case it is desired to use the bar with a single horse, the part to be used is unscrewed from the double nut C, and the knob from the outer end of the other part is screwed upon `it, thus forming a neat single bar.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A trotting-bar formed of the two parts A B, the double connecting-nut O, the knobs D, the slotted or grooved sleeves E, the tongue F, the collar G, the swiveled bow H, the reinbars I, and the ornaments J K, constructed and combined substantially as herein shown and described.
