Be it known that 1, JOHN C. DE Boo, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.-

My invention relates to improvements in mops; and its object is to simplify, improve and cheapen the construction set forth in my Patent, No. 1,244,592, granted October 80, 1917. Another object is to provide a ferrule which is adapted to be readily adjusted and snugly fitted to the ends of mop handles of varying sizes, while at the same time producing a construction which is strong and durable and holds the mop material firmly and securely in place.

My invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement, and in the parts and combination of parts as herein set forth and claimed.

Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the ferrule on a line corresponding to the line 66 of 'fhe ferrule 1 is formed from a flat blank having retaining flanges 2 struck up on opposite sides thereof and having laterally extending ears 3 formed on the remaining sides opposite each other, each of said ears being provided with a perforation 4 to receive the U-shaped wire bail 5. Holding points 6 are integrally formed by stamping them up from the ferrule 1 and are adapted to be driven in and embedded in the lower end of the mop handle 7 to anchor said ferrule in fixed relation thereto. The mop handie 7 is provided with a transverse opening 8 extending therethrough a short distance from its end and is adapted to receive a fastening and holding wire 9.

The ends of the wire bail are passed upwardly through the perforations 4 and each end of said bail is then bent downwardly to form a loop 11 as shown at the right in Fig. The cars 3 are then bent upwardly against the sides of the mop handle and over the extended end 12 of the wire bail 5. The loops 11 are adapted to register with the transverse opening 8 and a wire is passed through said loops 11 and transverse opening 8 respectively and bent to form the fastening and holding wire 9, the ends thereof being preferably embedded 1n the mop handle as illustrated, thereby more and forming a smoother surface than otherwise.

In the modified construction, illustrated in Fig. 5, the wire bail 5 is bent to form the loop 11, but does not have the extended end 12 adapted to fit under the ear 3. In this modification also instead of the holding points 6, the ferrule is provided with a central perforation 13 adapted to receive a ferrule anchoring nail 14:. In this construction, likewise the ears 3 are bent to closely embrace the single wire of the bail which rests against the side of the handle within the groove 15.

hen a sufliciently large quantity of mop material 10 is placed between the ferrule 1 and the bail 5 it will be firmly held therein after the parts are assembled as above described. The retaining flanges 2 assist in. holding the mop material in pla e and also in connection with the wire bail serve to prevent it from spreading unduly adjacent the end of the mop handle.

lVhile I have shown particular constructions it is apparent that my invention is capable of some modification without departing from the scope or spirit thereof.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a mop. a handle having a transverse opening near its lower end, a ferrule having holding means formed thereon and adapted to engage said handle, mop material, a bail adapted to receive and hold said mop material, engaging means between said ferrule and said bail, said bail having a loop formed upon each end thereof and adapted to register with the transverse opening in said handie, and a holding wire adapted to pass through said loops and opening, respectively,

securely holding the same in position and be bent into embedded engagement with said handle.

2. In a mop, a handle having a transverse opening therethrough near its lower end, a ferrule having downwardly extended oppo sitely disposed curved flanges, oppositely disposed perforated ears extending laterally from the plane of the body to said ferrule, mop material, a U-shaped bail adapted to receive and hold said mop material and having its arms held in said perforated ears and having a loop upon the upper end of each arm adapted to register with said opening in the handle, and a holding wire extending through said loops and opening, respectively, and bent into embedded engagement with said handle, substantially as set forth.

In a mop, a handle having a transverse opening therethrough near its lower end, a ferrule fastened on the lower end of the mop handle, short perforated ears on said ferrule adapted to be bent up to engage opposite sides of said handle and having; grooves on their inner sides, a bail adapted to receive and hold in its loop a quantity of mop TD aterial and being held in said perforations and grooves, said bail having loops formed upon its ends to register with said transverse opening, and a one-piece "fastening and holding wire passed through said loops and said transverse opening, respectively, and having its ends bent toward said handle into holding engagement with said loops, respectively, and said holding wire being spaced apart from said ferrule, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.

4. In a mop, a handle having a transverse opening near its lower end, a ferrule having a plurality of holding; points formed integrally with and extending at an angle to the boc y of said ferrule, downwardly extending flanges integrally formed on opposite sides of said ferrule and perforated ears formed integrally upon the remaining opposite sides of said ferrule and each adapted to be bent upwardly to form a groove on its inner side, a U-shaped bail. adapted to receive in its loop a quantity of mop material and being held in said perforations, said bail having loops formed upon its ends adapted to register with said transverse opening, and a tastening and holding Wire passed through said loops an d a transverse opening, respectively, and having its ends bent against the handle.
