TROUSERS.

fipplication filed. December 13, 1920. Serial No. 430,188.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Bnounnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l l orcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers and particularly to certain improvements in the waist portion thereof. It is the object of my invention to provide trousers so constructed that a belt may be permanently attached thereto while at the same time the trousers shall have a considerable range of adjustment at the waist.
With this general object in view, 1 pro vide slits or openings at the sides of the trousersextending downward a shortdis tance from the upper edge thereof, these slits or openings being substantially con cealed by the belt.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be' hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front view of a pair of trousers embodying my invention; and
2 is a detail side view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a pair of trousers 10 which in general are of the usual construction. The trousers are provided with a belt 11. preferably secured. to the trousers in the rear portion thereof and in the front portion extending through the usual loops 12. The belt 11 is preferably made from the same material as the trousers although this is not an essential fea ture of my invention.
At each side of the trousers, short vertical. slits 13 are provided adjacent the upper edge thereof, preferably by leaving; the side seams open for a short distance at the top thereof. In the preferred form. short flaps 14: (Fig. 2) extend to the rear of the slits 13 and the slits also extend a short distance below the lower edge of the belt.
WVith the trousers thus constructed, the slits 13 are substantially concealed by the belt 11 but permit a considerable adjustment'of waist measurement, as the rear portion of the trousers to which the belt is secured may be caused to more or less over lap the front portion of the trousers, this overlapping being concealed by the belt 11,.
ith the usual continuous construction it the waist band, the tightening of the wearers belt to a dimension even slightly less than the size of the waist band necessari 1y produces a fold or pleat in the garment. With my improved construction, the belt may be shortened two inches or more and the surplus material will overlap at the slits, leaving a smooth fitting surface.
Having thus described my invention it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art within the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a pair of trousers and a belt encircling the front portion thereof, said trousers provided with side seams and havingshort slits at the upper ends of said side seams extending downward from the upper edge of said trousers, and said belt forming part of and being secured to the rear portion of said trousers adjacent each slit and at the rear edge thereof, said slits being substantially concealed by said belt but permitting waist adjustment of said trousers by said belt.
2. An article of manufacture comprising-2; a pair of trousers and a belt encircling the front portion thereof. said trousers provided with side seams and having short slits at the upper ends of said side seams extending; downward from the upper edge of the trousers and having free flaps extending rearward behind said slits. and said belt being secured to and forming part of the rear portion of said trousers adjacent each slit and at the rear edge thereof. said slits being substantially concealed by said belt but permitting waist adjustment of said trousers by said belt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
HARRY BROUDER.
