Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANGELO DIAZ, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hair-VVaving Device, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hair curling devices, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a new and improved device upon which a lock of hair may be wound preparatory to the curling operation. 1 r

Another object of the invention isto provide a device of the above character,-of such construction that the ends of the hair composing the lock or strand to be curled are firmly clamped together, and the strand prevented from becoming uncurled or unwound when once positioned thereon.

Other objects and aims of the invention more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements,combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:

Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the parts in open position.

Figure 2 is a plan view, showing one of the clamping devices in open position; and

Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view-taken through the device, showing all the parts in closed positions.

Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes a spindle or shaft, upon which a lock of hair is to be wound. This spindle or shaft is preferably formed hollow, one end belng provided with the ears 2, which approach each other at the point 3, said ears being apertured to form a support for the pivot ofa clamping member 4. This clamping member is formed of a strip of metal arc-shaped in cross-sec tioii, so that it is adapted to lie in engagement with the shaft 1, as clearly shown in- Fi ure 3 of the drawing.

ivotally mounted upon the pin5, which also forms a pivot for the clamping member 4, is a locking member 6, the same comprising a rectangularly shaped strip of metal, the side parts 7 and 8 of which are spaced 1n the shaft or spindle 1.

The locking member at its outer end is provided with a handle 9, and the contracted neckpart 10, which is adapted to be frictionally engaged with ears 11 and 12, formed upon the outer extremity of the hollow spindle 1, such frictional engagement holding the parts in the positions shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. 1

In the use of my device, both the locking member 6 and the clamping member 4, are swung rearwardly, so that the ends of the hair can be positioned upon said hollow spindle. The clamping member 4 is then swung forwardly so as to engage the ends of the hair and clamp them between its inner surface, and the exterior surface of the spindle 1. I

The strand of hair is then wound about the spindle 1, and the clamping member 4,

thus causing the ends of the hair to be more firmly clamped between the clamping memher and the hollow shaft. During this operation the locking member 6, which as before stated, has been swung rearwardly, is utilized as a handle.

When the entire strand, or such part of it as it is desired to have curled or waved, has been wound about the spindle and its associated clamping member, the lockingmember 6 is then swung forwardly until the neck part thereof catches with the ears 11, 12 of said spindle.

Whenthis operation has been performed, it will be noted that the lock of hair extending from the scalp to the curling devices passes through either of the spaces 13 and 14, provided between the sides 7 and 8 of the locking device 6 and the spindle 1; andthat x when the locking device is in position the lock of hair cannot be unwound therefrom. It will accordingly be seen that I have provided a construction well adapted'to attain, among others, all the ends and objects pointed out, in a simple, yet eflicient manner. The device which is more particularly adapted for assisting in theoperation of curling or waving hair to produce what is known as a Marcel wave, it may also be used in other hair curling or waving operations.

As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the followin claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above de- .ber pivotally mounted scription or shown in theaccompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the'clas's described, in combination, a hollow shaft provided with flattened longitudinal ears extending in pairs from the ends thereof and lying in opposed relation; a trough-like clamping memon a pair of said ears and adapted to engage the end of a strand of hair to be wound about the surface of said shaft, and said member, and a substantially rectangular locking member pivotally mounted on said shaft and having its sides in parallel and spaced relation thereto, said clamping member having a spring loop formed in the end opposite said pivot and adapted to engage a pair of said ears.

2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a tubular member having at either end a pair ofvflat longitudinally extending ears placed diametrically of said -member and bent into engagement, a troughsprin like clamping member provided with a pair of longitudinal ears overlying a pair of ears end of a strand of hair to be wound about said tubular member and said clamping member, and a substantially rectangular locking frame movably mounted on said pivot and having straight sides lying in paralellel and spaced relation to said tubular member, said locking frame having formed in the end opposite said pivotal mounting a loop having a restricted openmg where y to engage the second pair of ears on said tubular member to hold 'said frame in position so as to prevent the coiled hair from unwinding.
