Be it known that l, EDWIN L. RoBiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at li rovidence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Swivel for Natch Chains and the like, of which the following a spe iiication.

T he purpose of my invention is to provide a swivel for watch chains and the like in which the tongue controlling spring is en tirely concealed within the body oi the swivel and the pin on which the tongue is commonly pivoted is dispensed with.

To these endsmy invention consists in th new and novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Figure 9 shows details of the spring engaged end of the tongue.

In the drawings: 1 represents the chambered body of the swivel. which may be of any exterior conformation, ornamented or plain.

l/Vithin the chamber of said body is a vertically disposed spring arranged and adapted to be connected at one end with the upper end of the swivel latch or tongue to control the lateral movements of the latter. While said spring may be or any term 1 have for purposes of illustration shown in Figs. 2 and a two-arm V-shaped spring, as 2, and in Figs. 6, "i' and 9 another form of two-arm spring, as 3. Both of which may be formed or wire.

' The chambered portion of the swivel body is open at its lower end (Fig. 6). On its upper end rotatably is mounted in the well known manner the ring 5.

The lower open end of said chambered body is tightly closed by an immovable cupshaped cap 6 (Fig. l) which is provided in its face near one side with a perforation 8. at the'opposite side of said cap face and in alinement with said perforation is rigidly secured one end of the swivel hook or loop 7 (Fig. 5).

The upper end 9 of the tongue of the swivel hook is swaged or otherwisethinned, and is near its upper end pierced as at 11, to receive the end of the controlling spring (Figs. 2 and 9). Said tongue is further provided on its inner edge with a laterally directed notch 10 which engages with the edge of the perforation 8 of the cap 6 which thereby .SI'VQS a fulcrum for said tongue (Figs. 2. 5 and 9).

The hook 7 being secured to the cap 6 and the tongue 4: fulcrumed on said the latter is passed over the open end of the charm bored body 1 and swaged immovably there on thereby closing said open end and concealing the spring (Figs. 1 and 2).

I have thus provided an eliicient and. dura ble swivel for watch chains and the like in which the swivel. body is closed at one end. the swivel hook tongue fulcrumed on said closed end for oscillating movement as controlled by a spring concealed within said swivel body. Such spring being preferably of wire. may be of any form.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A swivel, for watch chains and the like comprising a chambered body member open at one end and closed atthe opposite end. a ring rotatably mounted on said, closed end. a laterally acting spring vertically disposed in said chambered body, a cup-shaped cap immovably secured over and closing said open end of said body member and provided in its face near one side with a perforation. a swivel hook consisting of a loop member and a latch member, one end of said loop member secured to said cap face in alinement with said perforatlon, and the upper end of said latch member extending through sald perforation into said'chambered body memher and provided with a laterally directed notch in its inner edge engaging said c-apiat oneside of said perforation whereby said latch is held in operative position and fulcrumed on said cap for oscillating movements to open and close the swivel hook, and also provided withmeans for operatively connecting the upper end of said latch with said spring 2.
