LOGGING HOOK.
Application filed March 21 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonopah, in the county of Nye, State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Logging Hooks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hooks and particularly to hooks used in logging camps.
One object of the invention is to provide a hook of this character which will not accidently open to release the ring engaged therewith.
Another object is to provide a hook of this character which is simple in construction. and which can be easily and quickly opened to release the ring when desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hook showing the same in closed position and a ring engaged therewith.
Figure 2 is an inverted perspective view of the hook in open position.
Referring particularly to the accompany ing drawing 10 represents a hook having its inner end bifurcated, as shown at 11, for the reception of the latch member 12. the latter being supported in said bifurcation by the pivot pin 13 and being curved at its outer end toward the hook, as shown at 25. The said latch member is provided with a headed stem 14; on which is swiveled the loop 15.
The bill of the hook 10 is broadened. at it to form the two shoulders 17 which shoulders, as well as the extremity oi? the bill being beveled, as shown at 18 and 19, respectively. The said bill is also reduced in thickness, vertically, and produces the inner beveled shoulder 20.
The outer end of the latch member 12 is formed with a longitudinal. channel 21, in its Serial No. E i-5,431.
lower or inner face, and formed transversely of said face, and inwardly of the tip thereof, is a channel 2' '2. The formation of the trans verse channel results in the dependin ears which are arranged to straddle tli e bill of the hook 110, inwardly of the lateral oroections of the broadened portion 16, and aga nst the beveled shoulders 18. The said PTOJQCtlOIlS are received in the transverse channel 22, as shown in the drawin and especially in Figure 1. m
The ring or link oi a chain is en a ed a 1 a n with the hook 10, and then the latch member 12 is swung down to engage the bill of the hook in the manner just described. he combined pull of the ring; 2st on the hook and the pull upon the ring 15, fastened to the curved portion will serve to maintain the latch member in proper engaged position with the bill of the hook and will securelv hold itrq'ainst displacement This holding: action icr ed through the medium of the curved 011(61 end of the member 12. will be readily understood. Thus forward pull on the hook causes the latch member to autoinaticall swing" into engagement with the bill of the hook and remain in such engaged position.
d ha claimed is:
A lo n53 hook comprising a hook proper having "s bill reduced in l thickness and widened to form lateral projections having beveled end faces. l e latch member pivotall v suppru'ted hv the inner end of the hook and having its outer end longitudinally channeled to prodi'ice depending wings tor straddling engagement with the bill the hook innardl at the pi.*o ections. said latch member being transversely channeled to receive the said lateral projections. the latch member being provided with hook engaging means at its outer end. the hook inp' means and the channeled end oi. the latch being at opposite sides of the lon itlldllitl axis Oil the hook. b Tn testimony whereof, I aiilix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ABEL MARTIN.
