. 1,523,765 J. E. .GILCHRIST SAFETY BUTT H6OK Filed Aug. 28, 1924 JZI EzZmrzfsZ Patented Jan. 20, 1925.
PATENT QFFlCE.
JOHN E. GILCHRIST, OF SOUTH BEND, NASHINGT0N.
SAFETY BUTTHOOK.
Application filed August 28, 1924. Serial No. 734,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. Grnonnrs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at- South Bend, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Safety Butthook, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto butthooks such as are used in logging and other operations and the object thereof is to provide a hook of this character constructed for attaching or detaching choker cables and preventing them from becoming accidentally detached while in use.
Another object ot the invention is; to provide a hook of this character having simple and eflicient means for locking it in operative position. a
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hook embodying this invention, shown in closed operative position in full lines with the plunger or closing element open in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts broken out and in section to show the construction of the locking plunger or'bolt; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
While the hook constituting this invention is primarily intended for logging purposes obviously it may be used wherever a hook provided with means for preventing it from becoming accidentally unhooked can be used to advantage. This hook comprises the usual body member 1. having an inturned substantially parallel bill 2 with a reduced. cylindrical terminal 3 provided at its base with a shoulder l, said terminal being designed to enter a socket in a locking bolt presently to be described.
The opposite end of the body member 1 has an opening 5 for connection of the chain, not shown and extending laterally in ad vance of this opening is an arm 6 having a bore 7 extending longitudinally therethrough in which is mounted to slide a plunger or locking bolt 8. This bolt 8 is of a length sufficient to span the distance between the bill at and the arm 6 and has a socket 9 at its front end to receive the reduced terminal 3 of said bill. An annular rib or flange 10 is carried by the socketed end of the plunger 8 and is designed to prevent the bolt or plunger from dropping out of the bore 7 when the bolt is retracted. A spring pressed locking plunger or pin 11 forms a thumb latch mounted to move transversely of the plunger 8 it being shown here housed in a bore 18 extending transversely through said plunger 8 and which is reduced at its outer end for the passage of the latch 11 which has an annular flange 12 at its inner end to engage a shoulder at the outer end of the bore 13 for limiting the outward movement of said. latch. it screw 14 closes the other end of the bore 13 and forms an abutment for the spring 15, the other end of which engages the enlarged head of the latch 11. This spring exerts its tension to normally force the latch 11 outward into locking position so that when the bolt or plunger 8 is closed this latch will abut the inner face of the arm 6 and lock said bolt in operative position. To retract the bolt or plunger 8 the latch 11 is depressed to permit the bolt to be slid into the bore 7 and the pressure of the latch 11 against the wall of said bore will operate to hold the plunger 8 in adjusted position. The flange 10 not only forms a stop for preventing the bolt or plunger from falling out but also affords a finger grip for moving the bolt into retracted position.
i The screw 1 1, the head of which is countersunk in the plunger 8, ZlfiOl'ClS access to the spring 15 located in the bore 13 for renewal and repairs when necessary and also permits the replacement or removal of the latch 11.
I claim 1. A hook of the class described comprising a bill and an arm arranged opposite each other and spaced apart, a locking bolt carried by one of said members to span the space between them, said bolt and the other member having interlocking elements to engage when the bolt is closed, and a spring projected latch arranged transversely in the bolt to engage the other member to lock the bolt in closed position.
2. A book of the class described compris ing a body member having an inturned bill: and an integraldaterally extending arm' ar-- ranged opposite each other and spacedapart, said bill having a. reduced terminal with a shoulder at its base, a bolt mounted to slide in said arm, and having a socket at its -;in-
oppositeeach otherand spaced apart, said bill having a reduced terminal with a shoulder at Its base, a bolt mounted to slide; in saldarm'andhavlng a socket'atuts'inne-r end utoreceive :the terminal of said bill, and
a spring pressed latch operating transversely of saidbolt to engage and extendlng transversely ofthe inner end er the arm when the bolt is: its: projected position andlock the bolt in such position, and a stop Q carried by bolt for 'preventing 'it' from 1 slipping out of the arm when in' retracted position:
4. A" hookof the class described i compris ing a'body 1nember having an inturn'ed bill at one end spaced laterally there-froin 'and' alaterally extending arm at the other end aligning? with said bill, and spaced therefrom said arm having a longitudinally extending bore, a plunger mounted to slide in said bore. and close the space between said ar-m-and bill, interlocking elements carried by said plunger and bill to engage when the bolt isclosed, and a latch operating in a plane transversely to the plane of movement of the bolt and adapted to engage the inner end'of the arm transversely to lock the bolt in operative position 5. A hook having a bill with a reduced terminal provided with a shoulder at its base, a slid-ablymounted bolt operating opposite said bill and in longitudinal alinement therewith, means for locking said bolt in closed position, and a combined stop and finger grip-carried by said bolt to prevent its accidental"disengagement from the hook and to facilitate the adjustment thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereunto afiixed my signature inthe presence of two witnesses.
