MOP HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EARL FINLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop Handles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mops and more particularly to the means for securing the same to the handle.

Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a mop having sim ple means whereby one of the side bars may be quickly released from looking engagement with the handle so as to permit of the removal of the cleaning element.

A further object is to provide a mop which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a mop illustrating the means for detachably connecting one of the side bars to the handle.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary edge elevation of the mop.

Figure 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means for securing the side bars to the handle.

Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line t-4 of Figure In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a handle having its forward end pro vided with a ferrule 6 which prevents the handle from splitting. A feed screw 7 is permanently and non-rotatably connected to the forward end of the handle and is preferably secured in a socket in the forward end of the handle in the usual manner. A clamping bar 8is provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extending sleeve 9 re ceiving the screw 7 and adapted to be ad 'vanced by a thumb nut 10 threaded on the screw 7 When the clamping bar 8 is advanced the same presses a cleaning element 11 firmly into contact with a cross bar 12 formed by bending the forward end of a side bar or arm 14 laterally. in Figure 3 the rear end portion of the side bar 14 is curved inwardly as indicated at 15 and is anchored in a socket 16 in one side of the handle by means of a plurality of staples 17.

The mop head also includes a second side bar 18 pivoted at its forward end as indi cated at 20 to the terminal portion of the cross bar 12. The side bar 18 is similar in construction to the side bar 1 1 and has its rear portion formed with a bend 22 defining an attaching portion 23 received in a socket or recess 24 in the handle opposite the recess 16.

When it is desired to lock the side bar 18 to the handle a split locking sleeve 25 is moved down over the attaching portions of the side bars so as to hold the said attaching portions firmly within said recesses in the handle. When the split locking sleeve 25 is advanced to extend over the attaching portions of the side bars, slots 30 in the forward portion of the locking sleeve receive the adjacent portions of the

15 and 22 whereby to hold the split locking sleeve in position should the wing nut 26 on a fastening bolt 27 become loose. The fastening bolt 27 is extended through a pair of radial ears 28 formed at the ends of the split sleeve, the said ears being adapted to be drawn together by means of the fastening device for securely engaging the split sleeve with the attaching portions of the side bars.

In use the clamping bar 8 which has its ends slidably connected to the side bars 14. and 18 is retracted and the pivoted bar 18 is swung outwardly so that the cleaning element 11 may be readily positioned on the cross bar 12. The pivoted cross bar 18 may now be swung inwardly and the locking sleeve 25 subsequentl engaged with the same to hold the side ar in position. The thumb nut 10 may now be rotated for advancing the clamping bar 8 to secure the cleaning element in position.

I claim A mop comprising a handle, a pair of side bars having their rear portions formed with bends defining attaching members, the forward end of the handle being provided with recesses receiving said attaching members, means to permanently secure one of said attaching members within one of said recesses, a split locking sleeve slidable on said handle and adapted for engaging said attaching members, the forward end of said locking sleeve being provided with oppositely arranged slots adapted to receive the bent portions of said side bars, radially projecting ears formed on said sleeve, fastening means extending through said ears to hold said sleeve in gripping engagement with said attaching members and said handle,

and a cross bar having connection with said 10 side bars, one of said side bars being i\'- oted to said cross bar.
