Be it known that I, NEWTON S. I-IILL- YARD, acitizen of theUnited States, resid ing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State ofMissouri, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in F lex'ed- Blotter. Holders. `of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to` improvements in and the objects of my improvements are, first; to provide a blotter holder of this class, in which either one, or a'plurality of sheets of blotting paper can easily and quickly be detachably secured in liexed form, thereby providing a tightly stretched curved blotting surface intowhich the fluid portion of written ink is absorbed, without appreciably spreading the latter,

Perforations 8 are formed through the end portions` of said sheets of blotting paper .(see Fig. 3,) in such position, that they are close to `the holding edges 3 of the holders.

In operation, the user of the blotter holder places a plurality of sheets lof blotting paper 7 against the back sheet '6, and bends the ends of the sheets of blotting paper upon the back of said back sheet, as seen in Fig. l, after which he inserts one end of the thus formed pile of sheets into one ofV the holders. He thereafter fiexes said pile of sheets and inserts the other end thereof into the other holder and releases said pile of sheets.

The flexed end portion of the back sheet 6, which extends into the holder l, is ful'- crurned on the pressing edge 2, thereby increasing the pressure of said back sheet at its extremity, which increased pressure is exerted on the end portion of the pile of sheets of blotting paper 7, firmly pressing the latter against the holding edge 3.

Thile in this position, as seen in l, the ends of said pile of sheets are abutted against the inner surfaces of the holders l and d, which hold said ends against lngitudinal movement. The edges 3 of said holders hold the end portions of said pile of sheets against movement downward, out of said holders. The edges 2 hold the end portions of said sheets, snugly against each other, and press thereon during the operad tion ofthe described blotter holder.

In using the described blotter'holder and the blotting paper held thereby, the user oi" the same grasps the bar 5 and by it and its connected parts, gently presses the back sheet 6 downward, thereby pressing a portion of the surface of the exposedv sheet of blotting paper 7, upon the ink to be thereby absorbed. Ee thereafter rocks the described holder back or forth, or in. both directions, without sliding said blotting paper upon the writing, thereby absorbing -the liquid portions of said ink.

After said exposed sheet becomes so saturated with ink. that a clean sheet is desired, he places the edge of an edge tool or the end of any pointed instrument, between said saturated sheet and the adjacent sheet ofr blotting paper, and thereby tears said saturated sheet, along one of the lines of perforations 8, until said sheet is thereby sufficiently released to be grasped bythe hand. He then grasps the thus freed portion of said sheet of blotting paper and tears it along the lines of perforations S, removing said saturated sheet from the holder and exposing a clean sheet of blotting paper 7 Said operator repeats the previously described operations of removing a saturated sheet of blotting paper, until the entire plurality of said sheets is thus used, after which he removes the back sheet 6 and repeats the operations of replenishing the holder with new blotting paper.

in actual practice, it is frequently the case, that the conventional flat blotting paper is beneath other flat sheets of' paper and lies flat upon the desk or table, which cause the loss of a considerable amount of time and patience in inding and picking it up. In evenly pressing it upon the ink, to be thereby absorbed, it frequently happens that the passage of the hand thereover, produces a wave in said ilat blotting paper, in advance of the hand. Farther movement of the hand as it flattens said wave, causes the blotting paper thereahead to creep over the ink, thereby causing unsightly blots in the writing.

My handle 5 being above the surface of the desk is seldom obscured from view, is easily and instantly grasped, and the flexed blotting paper is thereby quickly applied to the ink to be absorbed, without any of the previously described injury to the writing and in the minimum amount of time.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A sheet holder transversely of segmental form; a pressing edge formed of one of the longitudinal edge portions ofsaid holder return bent'upon itself; a holding edge on the other longitudinal edge of said holder said holding edge being formed of4 a portion of said holder bent at an incline inward and'upward with a space' between said' holding edge and said pressing edge for insertion therebetween of' one of the transverse edges of an elastic flexed back sheet and of a flexed pluralityk of perforated sheets of blotting paper; another sheet holder of the same construction for similarly holding the opposite ends of said sheets; and a rod the'ends of which are secured in the center of one of the sides of said holders respectively lat a right angle thereto with the pressing edges of said holders beneath the respective ends of said rod.l
