HAND BAG.
Specification of LetterslPatent; Patentefl May 9,
Application filed January 11, 1921. SerialNo. 436,425.
To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, 'NEAX BRILL, a citizen of the United States, and, resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, .county, and
State of New York, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Hand Bags, of whichthe following is a specificamouths orop'eningson opposite sidesof the middle line of the bag and which give acces to similarly disposed compartments in the bag, which compartments are normally out of communication with one another so that when either mouth is open only one compartment will be'visible, but accessghowever will'be permitted to the opposite coinpartment without requiring that the bag be shifted or that the opposite mouth be opened.
To these ends the invention resides in a hand bag having a frame consisting of a middle and opposite side sections which are engageable with the middle section in the closed position of the bag, and a partition pivotally connected to the frame anddetachably secured to themiddle section and movable into spaced relation to either side of the middle section.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of the in vention of which the following is a specifier tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of themvention in open position and with the parti tion swung to permit of communicationbetween the compartments.
Figure 2 is avertical cross-section of the device in the closed position. v Figure 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation of'the connection between the flap and the middle section. v
Figure 4: is a vertical cross-section on the line H at Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail side elevation of aportionof the closure for one of the compartments.
Figure 6'is a vertical cross-section on the line6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a horizontal cross-section showing :a plan of the .parts illustrated in Figure 5.
Figure-8 is anenlarged detail side eleva tion of the parts of the closure for one of the compartments.
Figure 9 is a vertical cross-section taken approximately on'theline 99-of Figure 8.
The bag -5 may be formed of leather or other material found suitable for the purprovided a pocket 6. The mouth of 'thebag is connected to the substantially U shaped sections 7 and 8 of a frame which arepreferably-formed of metal and which function-to provide a binding for the edge of the material'of the bag5. Thepivots, one of which is shown and indicatedby'9 connectthe tergminals of the sections 7 and 8 and permit swinging thereof in theopening and closing of the mouth of the bag. termediate and-substantially U shaped section 10 is connected to'the pivots 9 and is formed throughout of metal. Section 10 is relatively wide in cross-section and its area issuch as to permit the sect1ons7 and 8 to telescope therein and extend substantially flush withlthe edges thereof inthe closed position of the bag. The middle portion of the section 10 is depressed longitudinallyso .pose, and on its outer side and one ;fa,ce-is 7 A middle or inas to provide a socket 11 in which is disposed a binding strip .12 of metal or the like on the inner end of the flap 13. The endsof the-socket 11 areopen to permit projection therethrough of extensions 14.15 of the bindingstrip 12 which are-bent or clinched over the outer face of the socket 11 and thereby operate'to'secure the flap to the in One terme'diate'section 10 of the. frame.
surfaceof'the flap 13 is faced with material corresponding to the outer facing of the bag 5 and, as shown in Figure 1,.a mirror 16 or the like is arrangedvon the inner'face of the flap. 'Whenthe flap is in the closed position a shown in the Figure 2, it will" extend over the pocket 6 and in this position it may besecured by any desired form of fastening means, such as a glove fastener,
the elements of which are indicated by 17- 18 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
When the sections-7 and 8 aretelescop'ed into the intermediate section 10 in the closed position of the'bag, the said sections 7 and 8 abut on-the opposite sides o'fthe socket 11, which then functions as a stop to limit the inward movement of the sections 7 and 8. In the closed position of the mouths 8 of downwardly and inwardly extending re 'silient plates 21-21 formed integral with or otherwise secured to resilient laterally extending plates 2222 disposed on opposite side portions of the intermediate section'10. Each of the male portions 19 consists oi a pair of knuckles in which are journalled the lateral extending portions wardly and outwardly.
6 and 9 i may 23*23 at the ends of the converging sidev portions 24c-24r. which form the handle portions of a pair of operating levers of convenient'size so as to be readily operatable by the fingers. Each lever may be formed of a single piece-oi steel. wire bent so as to be substantially triangular in contour and'olfset at the point adjacent to'theextensions 2323 so as to provide a pair of shoulders indicated by 25-25 in Figure 9, the free end portion levers as shown in Figure 9 slope outwardly as indicated by 2626 so as to permit of being readily grasped by the thumb and forefinger and moved up- When the parts are'positioned as shown in Figure 9 upward and outward movements' 'o'f either lever will cause the shoulder 25 thereof to impinge on the adjacent plate 21 andflex the same and also flex the intermediate sec-- tion 10 of'the frame and section to which-the lever is attached, thereby causing a relative movement of the sections until the male members19 are disposed below the recess 20, whereupon further turning movement of the handle onthe shoulder 25 which fulorums on the sidewall of the recess operates to move the section to which the lever is attachedoutwardly until the male members move beyond the lateral extension in which position of the parts one side of the hand bag will be in the open'position. A similar movement on the part of the opposite lever will effect the opening of the opposite side of the bag, so that the parts, except for the position of the flap 13, will then be as shown in Figure 1.
The partition 27 shown in Figures 1, 2, p be formed of any material found suitable for the purpose, and is here in shown as being flexible and is by preterence faced with material corresponding to the material used for the lining of the bag,
soas to present a fanciful appearance. The lower'endol the partition is fixedly secured in any'preferred manner to the middle portion of the bottom of the bag 5 and the upper edge is provided with a. substantially U shaped binding frame 28 formed of metal and pivotally connected to the sections 7, 8 and 10 at the pivotal point 9thereof. The area of the upper end portion of the partition is such as to permit of its telescoping into section 10 and engaging therewith by means of atapered knob 29 which enters a depression 80 herein shown as being located at the central portion of the lower outer face of the socket 11, all of which is clearly shown in Figure 9. The resiliency oi the intermediate section 10 and the binding 28 is such as to permit ofyielding en- .gagement between the knob 29 and the disengaged from the intermediate section and moved outwardly so asto giveaccess to the compartment indicated by ,31 in Figure 2, access to the compartment indicated by 32 may be had simply by exerting a pull on'the partition 27 until the same is disengaged from the intermediate section thus rendering as unnecessary the operation of disconnecting the flap and operating the opposite handle which controls the mouth of compartment 32. In like manner and when compartment 31 is :closed and compartment 32 opened, access may be had to compartment 31 simply by moving'th'e partition 2? in the opposite direction or toward compartment 32. A pocket 33. may be provided in compartment 31 for a coin purse and a number-oi: pockets .35 may be provided on the partition 27 and arranged sov as to face the compartment 32, for the reception of toilet paraphernalia such as a powder-pull,
be observed, does not require the opening for the closure of compartment 32.
Although I have shown and described an ideal embodiment of my invention, it; is to beunderstood that I .am not to be limited tothe structure's herein shown and described, I
it being obvious that minor mechanical changes may be made within; the scope claimed, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantagesof the invention. Y a Y Iclairn: t 1.
