FOLDING- BED.
Specification of Letters ratent.
IP'atentetl Ma 2, 1922.
Application filed June 2, 1921. Serialltl'o. 474,451.
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, Louis Rorrrrnno, a citizen of the United States,.and resident of the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Folding Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a folding bed and aimsto provide a device of this character more particularly in the nature of what is commonly known as a davenport.
In connection with those articles of furniture such as a convertible davenport in which the portions may be manipulated to either present an artistic piece of living room furniture, or a bed, it is a well appreciated fact that considerable difliculty has been experienced, primarily in that the parts permitting of this operation have been more or less complicated in construction and arrangement, and consequently expensive in manufacture. 1
Furthermore, for the mostpart, articles of furniture of this nature, have presented a more or less cumbersome appearance, and difficulty has also been experienced in properly disposing of the members which must necessarily be supplied in connection with the bed, when the article of furniture had its parts arranged to present a davenport.
With this in mind, my present invention aims to provide a convertible article of furniture in the nature of a bed in which the operating parts will be simple in arrangement and relatively inexpensive in manufacture, aside from the fact that the parts of the article of furniture may be readily I disassembled. I
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the nature stated which, when arranged to appear as a davenport, will present an extremely neat appearance, and will also provide ample space for the storage of a mattress, as well as other necessary articles of bedding, in such a manner that an extremely neat appearance will be presented.
Further-objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings which latter present practical embodiments of the same, and in which;
Figure 1 is a transverse view of my improved type of bed and showing the parts arranged to present a davenport.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the disposition of the parts when the same are extended to provide a bed.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing one of the end sections of the bed removed to disclose the mechanical 'construction of the same.
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 1 showlng one of the end portions of the davenport partly folded, the second end portion being removed to illustrate the position of the parts.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional front view of certain of the parts.
Figure 6 is a sectional plan View taken along the line 66 and in the direction of the arrows indicated in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary side vlew of certain of the mechanical details.
Figure 8 is a sectional view. taken along the lines 8--8 of Figure 7 and in the direction of the arrows indicated in this figure.
Figure 9 is a rear view of a slightly differ ent formof-bed than that illustrated in the preceding figures and showing the parts disposed to present a davenport, and
Figure 10 is. a sectional side view taken through the bed as illustrated in Figure 9.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 to 4 it will be seen that the reference numeral 15 indicates the seat of the article of furniture, and 16 the back thereof, both of these elements being cushioned in the usual manner Also supporting legs and arm rests, constituting side members 17, are provided, which side members lie adjacent the ends of the seat 15 and back 16.
Contrary to the conventional construction, of a davenport, it will be noted that each ofthe side members 17 are provided with a secondary section 18 preferably hinged as at 19 to these side members so that, as has been indicated in Figure 4', the secondary section 18 may be swung with respect to the side member with which it is associated, so as to finally align with and form a continuation of the said side member as in Figures 2 and 3.
' In this position, the side members will form head and foot sections for a bed, and with a'view of providing a base for this bed, attention is invited to Figures 3 and 4 in which the construction, underlying one of the side members is illustrated. It will be noted in these views that the bed includes a base portion 20 suitable for the reception of articles of bedding, etc. Also a member pro viding a longitudinal groove 21 is afiixed to each end of the base portion 20, and an arm 22 formed with a flared outer end 23 has its inner end tulcrumed in the slot 21 by utiliz ing a pin 24 secured to this inner end, which pin rides in the slot 21, a retention of the elements in this position being preferably eiiected by means out a guide member 25 secured to the base 20, and being in slidable contact with the arm 22.
Reference being had in addition to "the forgoing figures to Figures 5 to 8 inclusive, it will be noted that the element 16 censtit-ut ing the back or the davenport and a portion of the mattress of the bed carries a pin 'le swung past the base and allgned with which pin is freely movable within a T shaped slot 27 formed in the enlarged portion 23 of the arm 22, the shank of this T shaped slot preferably merging into the outer edge 01" the arm 22. Furthermore the arm 22 is formed with an opening into which a plate 28 snugly fits, the same being retained in this position by means of the screw 29, which screw affords a point of pivotal connection 01 the back 16 to the arm 22.
The parts of the device may readily be separated for cleaning by dis-engaging the side members 17 from the base member 20 by virtue of the detachable connection existing between these members, by providing hooks 8O ceoperating with eyelets 81, these fastening members being respec tively associated with the portions named. Subsequent loosening of the screw 29 will permit of the plate 28 being removed and the pin 26 may he slid to the shank portion of the T shaped slot 27 subsequent to which the back 16 is lifted to detach the same from the arms 22 thus effecting a complete disassembling ot the article of furniture.
Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 it will be seen primarily that the secondary section 18 of the side members 17 are swung to the position shown in Figure 4, and then to the position illustrated in Figure 3. The rest members 32 forming a part of the back 16 are thus exposed, and the back 16 may be swung by means of the arms 22 to the position shown in Figure 3, at which point the rest 32 willextend between the fillers of the side members or any other portions of the same provided "for this purpose, whereby to properly support the back. lVhen' the parts have assumed this position the arm 22 may be swung to a still further extent so that the pin 26 rides into the opposite end of the T shaped slot 27 from that which it formerly occupied, and the thus formed bed is now ready for use after the bed clothes have been removed from the base 20 and properly disposed upon the surfaces presented by the seat 15 and back 16 now forming a continuation of the former.
The bed illustrated in Figures 9 and 10 conforms in all particulars to that described in the preceding figure with the exception that the mattress 33 is normally disposed within a hollowed portion 34 formed in the back 35 so as to render the mattress more accessible, and it is to be noted in connection with both types of bed that by virtue of the slot 21 the back may the same subsequent to which the inner side edges of the back and base may be brought into intimate engagement with each other by effecting a retraction of the arm 22 thereby permitting the pin 24 to slide in the slot 21. Also by removing. the plate the bac ; s 16 or 35 may be swung by means of the arms 22' and also rotated. around the pins 26 thus presenting as an upper surface, the same surface which forms the back when the parts of the bed are disposed to provide an article of furniture, such as a davenport.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that l have provided afolding bed by means of which all of the objects brought out in the preamble of this specification, as well as others, are accomplished, and it will be understood that obviously nmnerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which I claim as;
1. A convertible article oil furniture includiiw a member presenting a base, aseat, a back, said seat being normally atlixed with respect to said base member, arms pivotally secured to said base member, said arms being formed with T shaped slots adjacent their outer ends and pins secured to said back and adapted to ride in said slot.
2. A convertible article of furniture including member presenting a base, a seat, a back, said seat being normally aflixed with respect to said base member, arms pivotally secured to said base membensaid being formed with an opening, a p e snugly fitting each of said. openings, andjscrews extending through said plate and having their innerends secured to said back.
