Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2. i922.
Application filed February 15, 1921. Serial No. 445,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS H. ENs'rnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Headwear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to headwear and has for its general object the provision of a neat, attractive and comfortable article of the type generally called a cap or hood having a tippet attachment which can either be lowered and fastened snugly about the neck in inclement weather or raised and secured around the crown in warmer times. Such an article is suited to men, women, and children, and so far as head-size is concerned can be adapted to all users with a very small number of separate sizes; but as regards neck size different individuals vary so widely that provision must be made for easy adj ustment in the effective length of the tippet or mufiler. Subsidiary objects of the invention are the provision of simple and attractive means for holding said tippet in its raised position, for holding fast both ends of the tippet when in lowered position, and for effecting the necessary adjustment in its effective length without interfering with article must be bilaterally symmetrical when the tippet or muflier is raised and not unpleasantly unsymmetrical when the tippet is lowered. Another object is the provision of a tippet-cap wherein the tippet shall overlap at the throat sufficiently to protect the wearer thoroughly at this point; and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this application I have shown a few out of the very great number of physical forms in which my inventive idea can be embodied, it being understood that these drawings are intended to be illustrative only and not limiting upon me. Fig. 1 is a front view showing the cap in position on the head of a wearer with the tippet raised; Figs. 2 and 3 are front and side views of the same cap in position on the wearers head, showing the tippet lowered; and Fig. 4 is a view of the article alone.
Fig. 5 is a front view of a modifiedform of my improved cap showing it in position Also the on the head of the wearer with the tippet raised; Figs. 6 and 7 are front and side views of the same cap with the tippet lowered; Fig. 8 1s a view of the last mentioned cap alone; and Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate still other modifications.
Describing the articles shown, by the use of reference characters applied to the draw- 1ngs, the crown or body of the cap consists of a bowl shaped piece 1 of knitted or netted fabric having around its front edge a finished selvage 2 and having secured around its rearward, edge a tippet or muffler 3 whose edge diverges from the edge of the crown-part at the points 4:-4 just below and in front of the ears. The ends of this tippet extend forwardly a sufficient distance to overlap the wearers forehead when turned up and likewise to overlap the wearers throat when turned down, their free ends being formed with buttonholes 55. Suitable means is provided to hold the ends of this tippet in line with each other and in proper relation to the edge of'the crown-part when the tippet is raised. In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4, one of the ends of the tippet is provided with a slit 6 through which the opposite end is inserted, after which the button-holes 55 are applied to buttons 77' carried by the exposed side of the tippet, thus fastening both ends against flapping and maintainlng symmetry of appearance. The front of the crown piece is provided with a loop or strap 8 through which both ends are passed, the slit 6 being so located as to come underneath this loop when the tippet is raised. When the tippet is lowered, one of its ends is likewise passed through the slit 6 after which both buttonholes 55 are applied to other buttons 99 carried by the opposite side of the tippet from. the buttons 7-7. Adjustment-for size is effected merely by changing the positions of the buttons 99 since the distance from ear to throat varies much more than the distance around the forehead.
In the form shown in Figs. 5 to 8, the tippet is made slightly shorter so that both the button holes 55 register with a single button 10 carried by the crownpiece. In this modification I substitute for the slit 6 a loop or strap 11 located atthat end of the tippet which is located underneath when thesame islowered. By passing the other end through this loop as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 that end is secured against displace- I ment and the other end is fastened a button 12 at the opposite side of the wearment of the end of the tippet which is underneath, the outer end being attached to a button 12 as before. When the tippet is turned up the button 13 is disclosed as shown in dotted lines and falls at one side of the button 10, so to balance it and preserve symmetry I employ a dummy button 14. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 10,
I employ two buttons 15-15 located upon opposite sides of the front-center of,the'
crown-portion, and form each tippet end with two button-holes 1 616 adapted to' Y register therewith so that the entire tippet when turned up is tightly held in place One end of the tippet is also provided with two buttons 17-17' adapted to receive the buttonholes of the opposite end of the tippet when the same is lowered, these buttons being on the outer side so as easily to be I fastened when required and also to be concealed when upturned. Adjustment for neck-size is accomplished by setting over the buttons 17 -17 which does not interfere with fastening the tippet in warm weather position. a
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. An article of headwear comprising a crown part and a tippet secured thereto around its-rearward edge, the remainder ofthe crown part having a free selvage edge, both ends of said tippet having buttonholes and the length of the tippet being such that its ends overlap both when brought around 'the crown and when.
brought around the neck, a pair of buttons carried by the side of said tippet which is exposed when the tippet is lowered adapted to receive said buttonholes and means carried by the front of the crown part for securing such tippet when raised with its edge even with such sel-vage edge. p v
2. An article of headwear comprising a crown part and a; tippet secured thereto around its rearward edge only, the remainder of the circumference of said lower part being free, both ends of said tippet having buttonholes and the length of said tippet being such that its ends overlap both when brought around the wearers crown'and when brought around the wearers neck, means carried by the front of the crown part for holding the side edges of such overlapping portion flush with such free edge during the time that the tippet is raised, and one or more buttons carried by the side of said tippet which is concealed when the tippet is raised and adapted when it is lowered to receive one or more of such buttonholes to secure the tippet. about the wearers neck.
3. An article of headwear comprising a crown part and a tippet secured thereto and having two ends which project forwardly, said ends being of sulficientlength to overlap both when brought around the wearers crownand'when brought around the wear ers neck, such ends having buttonholes which re 'ster with each other when the tippet is 1n its raised position, one or more buttons carried by the front of the crown part adapted to enter suchbuttonholes, and one or more other buttons carried by the tippete'nds adapted when the same are lowered to cooperate with one or more of said buttonholes to fasten the same about the wearers neck.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix
