INVENTOR wax-m. @1196 4% a 24mm ATTORNEY WILLIAM B. FINK, or New YORK; N. Y.
STATIONARY SIGN CONSTRUCTION.
To aZZw/mmitmay concern: c Be, it known that I, lVILLIAM- B. FrNK, a citizen of theUnited States, and a. resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a -Stationary S1gn Construct on, of which-the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. y
This invention relatesmore particularly to a class of structures adapted to be used for advertising purposes.
I -My inventionhasfor its object primarily to-provide a sign construction designed to be employed especially in the open in the vicinity of highways and at other conspicuous places for displaying on a surfaceelement advertisements and appropriate subject matters :inbillboard and poster forms for observation, and which is of-a knockdown type combining great durability when erected as well as providing an unusually "columnsorposts,- as 10 and 1 1, which may- .berof any suitable sizes and shapes, though the; columns illustrated are substantially.
large? area of surface for displaying the matter by reason. of enabling'both faces of the element to be utilized if desired. The invention also contemplates the provision of a sign construction adapted to permit yarious subject matters to be provided if preferred on a-number of surface elements at a given place and then transported for interchange of use as occasion may require, thereby dispensing with .thenecessity for repaintingeachsign separately at its respective locality when it is desired to change, the-subject matter as is incident to the types of such'signs at present inuse.
, The invention. consists essentially of two columns adapted to be supportedinstationary upright'positions in spaced relation, and
adapted to .be removably mounted to the columns crosswise between their lower parts is a bar having in its upperedge a-lengthwise groove. Adapted to be removably mounted. to the columns crosswise between theirupper parts are a pair of spaced bars for.receiving therebetween as well asbetween the columns a. removable surface element which is also adaptedto be remo'vably seated in the groov'e of the lower bar. This elementmay consist of a single platezor a plate divided into anumber of sections, and on one orboth-faces of the element may be painted, printed or otherwise providedisuit able subject matter forpubliesdisplay.
With these andlotherobjects in view, the
invention will be hereinafter more fully deli p plication filed August 22,1921. ,Serial No 494,354.
:ployed in the sign. v
' Specification of Letters Patent. ,Patent'ed play 2 1922 scribed with reference to the gaccompanyin drawing formmg a part. of this specification in wh chsunilar characters of reference in dicate corresponding parts in :all the views, and will then bepointedoutin the end of the description.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a fragmen- Z refinerie Ti the claims at tary view showing an. elevation of one form 5 of sign construction embodying my inven-= tion. Y
v Fig. Qfisa detail sectional view taken Ion the line 2-2 of Fig.1, with the surface elev merit removed therefrom.
Flg. 3 1s a detail sectional View taken on the line 3.3. of Fig. 1, also with the surface element removed'therefrom.
Fig. 4 is areduce d elevation of a surface element adapted tobe used in'the-sign, and 'Fig. 5 is a reducedelevatibn of another .formof surface. element which may beem- The sign construction is composed of two square or rectangular in cross section as well as being of lengths so that their lowerend parts maybe sunken or embedded inanappropriate basegas 12, such as earthin the vicinity of a public highway or other promv .irient place .whereby the other parts of the columns w ll be in upstanding posi-tionsin spaced relation above the base. The columns 10 and 11 maybezmade of concrete or other.
icementitiousmaterial, ormade ofa suitable composition or of. metal. In the lower parts" of the. columns 10 and 11 are openings, as j I 13. and l t, which'are in-register,. and in the upper-parts of the coluiniisare' two-other registered openings,as. 15 and l6, whichare and 14.
columns are .a'dapted to the removably on vertical alinement with" the openingsplfi In the lowerop'e nings l I mountedthe ends of abaror member. 11 7,".
andthis bar may be. of, a size to fitsnugly inthefaopenings with its lends terminating fat the opposite lateralv faces of the columns whenpositioned injthebase or support 12.
In .the upper edge of the bar or. member,
17. is a groove 18" extending lengthwise of the bar, andthis groove is of a length so,
that itsends terminate at the columns; To releasably fasten the grooved bar or mem.-
, 116' I her to the columns on the ends ofthenban, may be protruding lugs 19, 20, and on these lugs may be washers 21, 22 and nuts 23, 24
adapted to be screwed on the lugs for re-- leasably tightening the bars in-the columns. In the openings 15 and 16 of the columns and 11 are adapted to be removably mounted two spaced bars 25 and 26. The central :parts of'these bars are spaced at a distance corresponding to the width of the groove 18 of the bar 17, and thesebars are arranged so that the space 26 therebetween is also in register w1th the groove 18. The ends of both of the bars 25 and 26 are enlarged in angular shapes, as at 27 and 28,-
and these enlargedends are of sizes so that they fit in close contactas well as closely fitting removably in the openings and 16 of the columns 10 and 11. The bars and these 'enlarged ends are of lengths so that thefends terminate at the opposite lateral umns 10'and11 are adapted to be removably "inserted a surface element, as 33. This surface element maybe in the form of a single sheet of metal, or a plate of board or other suitable material, or the element may consist I of a nu'mberof sections, as 34, 85,36, Fig. 5.
On one or bothfaces of the surface may be painted, printed or otherwise provided one 1 or more advertisements, as 37,0r other appropriate subject matter for display tothe public. By providing for the use of both faces'of the surface element an area of space may be employedr equal to the area of two signs of alike size ofthe types of signs in ordinary use. Also by providing for the removably use of the surface elements either in a single sheet form or in' sections the subject matters may be provided thereon at a convenient place for being transported so that'they may be. "interchangeably. applied to thebars 17, 25, 26, as above explained. In the foregoing description, I have emscope thereof.
bodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limitjing myself thereto, as I am awarethat modifications'may be made therein without de parting from"the.'princ1ple or sacrificing any of the "advantages of this invention, therefore. Treserve to myself the right to makesuch changes as fairly fall'withi'n the Having thus described my invention, I claim as inew and desireto secure by Let- 1.A sign construction, comprising two columns supported 1n stationary upright positionsin spacedrelation and the columns having in their lower parts a removable bar disposed crosswise between the columns and the bar having a groove in its upper lengthwise edge, two bars removably disposed in spaced parallel relation between the upper parts of the columns so that the space therebetween is in register with the gr-oove of the lower bar, means on the ends ofthe grooved lower bar for releasably fastening the bar to the columns, means on the ends of' the pair of bars for releasably locking the bars together and for detachably fastening the bars to the columns, and a surface element removablymounted' in the space and in the grooveof said bars between the columns.
2. A sign construction, comprising two columns adapted to be supported in stationary uprightpositions'in spaced-relation and.
the columns having in their lowerparts registered openings as well as having registered openings in'their upper parts, a bar adapted to be removably disposed in the lower registered openings crosswise between the columns and the bar having a groove in its upper lengthwise edge, two bars adaptedto be removably disposed in spaced parallel re lat-ion in the upper registered openings crosswise betweenthe columns so that the space therebetween is in register with the groove of the lower bar, and a surface element adapted to be rem-ovaloly V mounted in the space and in the groove of said bars between the columns.
A sign construction, comprising two 2 columns adaptedfto be supportedin-stationary upright positions in spaced relation and the columns'having in theirlower parts reg-' istered openings as'well as having registered openings in their upperparts, a bar adapted to be ,remova'bly disposedin the lower registered openings'prosswise between the columns and the bar having agroove initsi upper lengthwise edge, two bars adapted to be removably disposed in spaced relation in i v the upper registered openings crosswisebetween the columns so that the space there'- between is in register with the groove of the lower bar, means on the ends of the grooved lower'bar for releasably fasteningthe bar to the C0lL1II1I1S,'II16aIlS on the ends of, the pair 2 of bars for releasably locking the bars to-.
gether and for detachably fastening the bars to the columns, and a surface element adapted to be removably mountedinlthe'space and in the groove of said bars betweenthe c'ol umns.
