HENRY E. YVILCOX, OF ILION, NEW YORK.
impncvswienr IN' worm-Boxes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,409, dated July 29, 1873; application led March 25, 1873.
To all uhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. WILcox, of Ilion, in thecounty of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Vork-Boxes, of which the following is a speciiication:
My invention consists ot' a ladys workbox constructed with a hinged lid having a cushion on its top, a drawer that is fastened on the inside, and a series of pins for holding spools ot' thread, with a corresponding series of holes through the sides of the box, marked by numbers to indicate the ineness ofthe thread, all as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a perspective view of the box with the lid partially raised. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section with the lid open; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion ot' the box, showing the manner ot' securing the drawer. Fig. 4 is sectional view of a portion of the cushion, showing its removable cover.
In constructing my improved work-box, I form the body A as represented in Fig. 1, which represents paneled sides having their ends itted into corner-pieces, which are rounded off externally, so as to make a neat and ornamental box.
Upon the box thus constructed I hinge a lid, B, which has on its outer surface a cushion, (l, which is secured to the lid by a circular frame or molding, 0, as shown in Fig. l, thus giving to it a very neat and inished appearance. The manner of securing the cushion and its detachable cover is shown in Fig. 4, in which U represents the body or' the cushion, of which c is the case. This is made up, ot' the proper size, and placed on the cover B otl the box. A piece ot cloth, a, is then provided, circular in form, and ofthe proper size to cover the cushion, over which it is spread. The molding O, which is shown in Fig. 4, has its inner face beveled, is then pressed down over the cloth a, thereby stretching it so as to press or draw out the wrinkles and lmake it smooth, it being held securely in place by having its edge glued or tacked to the beveled face of the moldingthe simplest method of doing which is simply to put a little glue on the molding when it is placed over the cloth. rIhe molding Gis secured to the lid by any suitable means, by which itcan be detached at will, so that when the cover a is worn or soiled it can be removed and replaced by a new one. A drawer, D, is inserted through the front side, as shown, of such a width as to leave on each side of it, within the box, a space wide enough to permita row of spools of thread to be set on end therein stamp or otherwise mark a number, 'as shown v in Fig. 1, to indicate the number or size ofthe thread on each pin. The drawer D has a button, Z, on its inner side, as'shown in Fig. 3, so arranged as that when turned as there represented it will engage with the inner side of the front of the box, and prevent the drawer from being opened when the box is closed, there being a lock to keep the lid closed, when desired.
To prevent the lid from falling over back and breaking the hinges, I secure to it and the sides ofthe box two pieces of tape or similar material, as shown at b, Fig. 2, the whole thus forming a very neat, compact, and handy work-box for ladies use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The. method of holding the detachable cover a in place by means of the molding O, arranged substantially as described.
2. The molding O having the cover a secured to it, and arranged in connection with the cushion U and lid B, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the box, the drawer D, having the button or fastening Z on the inside, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described work-box, consisting of the body A, drawer D, and lid B, with the cushion C, all arranged to operate as set forth.
HENRY E. WILCOX.
