T all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JACOB W. SHOCK, a
" citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, '01" which the following is a specification.
7 My present invention hasreference to improvements n wrenches.
My object is to produce a w rench in which the handle is provided with a hollow head through which is guided a provided with a toothed shank that isengaged by a worm, while also received in the head is the shank ofa second jaw firmly supported by. contacting engagement with certain of the walls provided in the slot and having means engaged by the shank ofthe first mentioned;
jaw, whereby,' when the first mentioned jaw is moved longitudinally, thesecond men tioned jaw will be moved at a" less rate of speed right; angularly with respect to the; first mentionedjaw, so that the handle may 7 beheld at a determined angle with respect to'the object to be engaged between the jaws,
and the said 'jaws properly guided by con tacting engagement with the support for the object to engagingfpositionwith said object and the necessity of tilting or other wise manipulating the handle of the wrench for causing a proper engagement of the jaws with the object will be entirely overbetween the jaws, whereby one jaw is caused a to move angularly with respect to the other jaw and whereby the engaging faces ofrthe H I threads 13- m the widened. end oi the slot jaws are at all times retained parallel.
' It is a still further object to produce a wrench provided with movable jawswhich are so constructed and arranged as'to be reinforced to a degree Wl'llCll will render the same as strong and effective as a wrench that has rigid ]2LWS.
The forego1ng,'and other objects which "will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and 'operative association of parts,'such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In the drawings a Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention.
A still further object is to. produce a.} SVeFSe opening 9 therethrough'. wrench in which two movable jaws are em- I ployed, coengaging means being provided Figure v2 is a similar view with th'side plate of the head removed 7 a Figure 3 is av sectional view onthe line 33 of Figure l. i I
Figure is a sectional view on the line H of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevation ofthe head with the side platemem'oved, and the jaws and operating'worm being]ikewise' removed. 7

providedwith the toothed shank.
-F1gure 8 isa similar view of the second l g V Referring now to the drawings in detail,
ithe'numeral l designates'the; handle of the wrench which is formed at one-end with an enlargement that provides the same with what' I 'will term a head and" which is designated by; the numeral 21'" The outer wall of the head; 2 is arranged-f angularly with respect to the handle", and' is, for a deteri jihined length depressed to'provide a pocket 3. The pocket enters from the end andthe rearangle end 7 of the head 2 is aslot 8, while below the s1ot. 'andcommunicating with the inner wall thereof, the head has-a The opening 9 is designed to receive therein a worm screw 10, the shaft therefor being-indicated by 'thc'numeral 11, and being in the nature of a: pin that: has its outen'end enlarged; and threaded as at '12:to engage through which the pin passes: The threaded endiof .the' pinis also her-ted, as attl i, whereby the same maybe removed.
' As two -movablejaws 'areiemployed, I
will, :for the sake of: convenience, refer to one'as-thei outer aw, and the other as the inner jaw. The outer. jaw-is indicatedby fthe numeral 15 an'dis provided with a right angular shank 16. ,The' shank has a toothed 3 edge 17 which' is engaged by the worm screw 10. "*The'shank-is of aithicknessaapproxi Figure 7 is a perspective'view-of the aw matelyequaling one-half of the thickness; 7
of the jaw 15, one of the'side walls of the said shank being flush with one of the sides of the jaw, and its opposite side is provided with an angularly arranged groove 18;
the head by a removable plate 25.
The inner jaw is indicated by the numeral 19 and is also provided with a depending portion forming a shank 20. The shank, for'the major portion of its length is of a width approximately equalling one-half of the thickness of the jaw 19, one of the sides of the shank being flush with one of the sides of the jaw and its second side is provided with an angularly disposed tongue 21 that is designed. to be received in the angle groove 18 in the shank 16 of the jaw 15. The shank 20 of the jaw 19 has the side thereof flush with the side of the jaw reduced, as at 22, the said reduced portion being received in the slot 6, and the shoulder 23 provided at the inner end of the said reduced portion being designed to rest on the shoulder 2st formed at the inner end of the slot 6, the said shoulder 24: being disposed a slight distance below the wall 5 of the pocket 3. The inner straight edge of the shank 20, and a portion of the head of the jaw 19 is designed for contacting engagement with the wall 1 of the pocket 3, and whereby the jaw 19 is effectively braced.
The shanks of the jaws are enclosed in The straight side of the shank 20 is in contacting engagement with the inner side wall of the pocket, and as stated, the reduced portion 22 of the said shank which is received in the slot 6, contacts with both the end and side walls of the said slot. The shanks of the jaws are enclosed in the pocket by a removable plate 26, and this plate contacting with the outer straight face of the jaw 15 and its shank 16 holds the straight side 'of the jaw in contacting engagement with the inner wall of the pocket 3, and also causes the reduced face of the shank to properly engage with the reduced face of the shank 20 of the jaw 19.
The turning of the screw will 'I110\'8 the shank 16 longitudinally through the pocket, bringing the jaw 15 toward or away from the jaw 19. The movement of the jaw 15,
incident to the tongue and groove engagement between the shanks of the respective jaws, will also cause the jaw 19 to travel angularly with respect to the travel of the jaw 15, and as a consequence the handle may be arranged at a determined angle when the jaws rest on a surface to the opposite sides of a nut or other article to be engaged, so that it is not necessary for the operator to manipulate the handle to bring the jaws to a proper position for engagement with the article.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having described the invention, 1 claim 1. In a wrench, a handle having a head, jaws having angle shanks arranged in lapping relation and movable in the head, an element on one of the shanks, means on the other shank receiving said element, means carried by the head and engaging the last mentioned shank for imparting a longitudinal movement thereto, and by virtue of such movement to cause the'element on the first mentioned shank to travel in the means on the last mentioned shank for moving the first mentioned shank.
2. Tna wrench, a handle having a slotted head, a jaw having an angularly toothed shank arranged in the head, a worm screw revoluble in the head and in engagement with the teeth of the shank, a second jaw having a shank arranged right angularly with respect to the shank of the first mentionedjaw, and coengaging means between the shanks of the respective jaws whereby the last mentioned jaw is moved right angularly with respect to the first mentioned jaw when the said first mentioned jaw is moved by the operation of the worm screw.
8. In a wrench, a handle having an; angle head at one end thereof which is provided with a pocket that opens at its endand at its outer edge, said head having right angular slots which communicate with the pocket at the rear thereof, and the inner wall of both of the slots providing shoulders, said head having a transverse opening therethrough which communicates with the longitudinal slot, a worm screw ournaled in said opening, a jaw having an integral right angular shank of a less thickness than that of the jaw, said shank having an angle slot on the inner reduced face thereof and having teeth which are engaged by the worm screw, a second aw having a reduced shank which rests against the inner wall of the pocket and which has a reduced extension received in the second mentioned slot, and the shank of the second mentioned jaw having an angle tongue which'is received in the angle slot of the shank of the first mentioned jaw, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JACOB W. SHOOK.
