UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ".FI. PRIDEMORE, OF ALICE, TEXAS.
BOLT HOLDER.
T o all whom it may concer/a Be it known that I, WrLLrAM I-I. PRIDE- Moim, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alice, in the county of Jim Wells and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enablel others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In the erection or the raising of structures utilizing bolts as the fastening means, difliculty is experienced in holding the bolt while tightening or loosening the nut. If the work is such that the head of the bolt and the nut can be reached by the same workman injury frequently occurs by the slipping of the wrench or like tool. On the other hand if the head and nut of the bolt are so situated that they cannot be reached by a single workman, the cost is materially increased because one workman is required to hold the bolt while another workman applies the nut.
The present invention provides means for holding the bolt stationary under all conditions so that both hands of the workman are free to ap-ply the nut or assist materially in the work.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
Ihile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a plan View of 'a bolt holder embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a sectional detail showing the same applied.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device consists of a iat body 1, usually in the form of a plate of rectangular outline. The body 1 is provided with a plurality of sockets or openings of different Specification of ietters Patent. Patented Apr. 1S, 1922.
1921.l serial No. 456,601.
sizes and disposition. As shown, the body eral sockets or openings are adapted to re-v ceive the heads of the bolts to be held during the application of or the removal of the nuts cooperating therewith. The central opening or socket 2 is utilized when the bolt is so situated that the device may. be conveniently applied. The marginal or edge sockets or openings 3 are utilized when the heads of the bolts are so situated in close proximity to projecting parts as to preclude the application of the holder to admit of the head of the bolt entering the opening 2. Lateral projections-4 are providedlon a side of the body 1 and serve primarily to space said body from the work to insure proper application of the holder to the head ofthe bolt. Bolts are usually provided with one or more washers and the projections 4 space the holder from the work to compensate for said washers and insure the heads of the bolts being properly received in the sockets or openings. Moreover, the projections 4 space the body from the work in a manner to admit of a suitable pry being utilized for removing the holder in the event of it becoming necessary to utilize force for this purpose. The projections 4 are formed with openings 5 which extend through the body 1 and are adapted to receive a pin or spike 6 whereby the holder is retained in proper position when applied to the bolt. The pin or spike 6 is driven into the work 7 as indicated in Figure 3, and the holder is slipped upon the pin 6 and over thej head of the bolt 9 and is retained in place by means of a set screw 8 threaded into the body 1 and having its inner end engaging the pin or spike 6.
The several bolt head receiving openings or sockets are adjustable and for this purpose reducers 10 are provided. The reducers 10 are in different sizes so that'the required size may be selected and fitted to the opening or socket selected to adapt the same to the size of the bolt head. In the preferred form the reducers 10 are of L-shape so as to fit adjacent sides of a socket or opening, whereby to reduce the same symmetrically with reference to the original shape of the bolt opening or socket.
sizes for cooperation with the heads. of different; sized bolts, and having spacing projections on -one'side, said projections having openings therein extending through the body, and set screws having their inner ends adapted to enter the openings of the projections. 'Y
