PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at F armington, in the county of Teton, State .of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoltHolders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to bolt holders or rather to that class of tools which are designed for holding the bolts rigid while their nuts are being threaded upon them. 0
The object in view is to simplify and at the vices and to this end one of the features of the invention lies in the provision of means vertical lon 'tudinal sectional view through the device, ig. 5 is a face view of the bolt engagmg head employed in the application of a nut to the bolt, and, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the character of the head used in the removal of a nut from the bolt.
As shown inxthe drawings the tool coinprises a Work engaging member and a bolt engaginglmem-ber and the former consists of a yoke s 8. ed member includin a connectmg or bo y portion 10 from w ich extend diverging arms 11' eachof these arms being bent substantially at its middle to exten ,as at 12 in spaced parallel relation. e bod portion itself includes an uplwardly or r1 t angularly bent portion 13 w ich 1s para el' to the portions 12 of the arms 11 but is of lesshei ht, than the sail I portions. The portion 13 forms a collar and is provided with a threaded aperture '14 through which is adjustably engaged the shank of a threaded clamping screw 15 the screw be1n provided at one endwith a handle 16 y means of which it may be turned. The oppositeend portion of the I clam ing screw 15 is unthreaded as indicate at 17 to form a stud and provided with a'transverse aperture 18 and thissupporting stud is des gned for engagement in a socket 19 forming a portion of a bolt engaging head end portion of the clamping screw there being a cotter pin 22 engaged through the openings to hold the head in place upon the said end. The face of this bolt engagin head 20 is concaved and provided with radial teeth or serrations which bite into the head of the bolt and prevent its rotation under conditions which will now be made apparent.
From the foregoing description of my invention it will be understood ofv course that the device is applied to the work through which the bolt is passed by'engaging the vertically bent portions of the arms of its yoke with one side of the work and turning the clamping screw until the bolt engaging head, which is at this time loosely engaged upon the screw, is brought to bear against the head of the bolt. Thecla'mping screw is then further turned so as to'increase the pressure of the'head against the bolt head and finally the pin is inserted through the socket upon the head and the unthreaded end of the said adjustin screw. The bolt is in this manner securely eld against turning and any tendency on its. part to turn at the time of screwinglthe nut upon the bolt will be arrested by t e biting-engagement of the radial teeth-upon the bolt en aging head into the head of the bolt.
