G.-0. ZIMMERMAN. HOLDER FOR smx PLUGS. APPLICATION FIL ED OCT 29.1921.-
Patentmi Sept.
Patented Sept. 19, 1922..
ed e? u GEORGE O. ZIMMERMAN, F MASON CITY, ILLINOIS.
HOLDER F03 SHARK PLUGS.
Application filed October 29, 1921. Serial No. 511,507.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. ZIMMEIF MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason City, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding the spark plugs of the cylinders of the internal combustion engines of motor cars, when the plugs are removed from the cylinders for examination and repair. It is found diflicult to hold the plugs with the tools ordinarily carried, and when no vise is available. This invention consists of a small and light holder for the plugs which can conveniently be carried in the tool box of a motor car, and which can be secured to any convenient portion of the car.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a. plan view of a holder for spark plugs constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the same, taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
A. plate 4 is provided, and 5 are hexagonal sockets of different size which project from the lower side of the plate, and which have inwardly projecting shoulders 6 at their lower ends.
The. spark plugs are made in standard sizes, and two sockets are usually sufiicient to engage with all the standard sizes. The spark plug when removed from the cylinder is placed in one of the sockets, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The shoulder supports the plug, and the socket prevents it revolving when a wrench is applied to it to take it apart.
The plate 4 has a flange 7 at one end, and 8 are bolt holes in the plate and in the flange. Any ordinary bolt is used for temporarily bolting the plate to any convenient part of the motor car. A clamping jaw 9 is arranged opposite the flange 7, and 10 is a bolt arranged in holes in the flange and jaw, so that the plate can be clamped to any suitable part of the car, if this form of attach ment should be found advantageous.
What I claim is:
A holder for spark plugs, comprising a [lat supporting plate having a plurality of hexagonal sockets of different size for en gagingwith spark plugs, said plate being arranged at one end-of the sockets which are unobstructed and open that end, and said sockets having inwardly projecting shoulders at their other ends for supporting the plugs in the sockets.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature.
GEORGE Q. ZIMlllERliIAN.
