Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1.122.
Application filed August 22, 1921. Serial No. 494,328.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known thatI, CHARLES W, MAY, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Bainbridge, in the county of Decatur and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Racks, of wh ch the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to display racks, and comprehends a construction prlmarily designed for supporting a plurality of phonograph records in a manner whereby either side of the record may be easily vlewed.
In carrying out the inventlon, I make use of a plurality of spaced superimposed d scs mounted for rotation, the discs being designed to support a plurality of record holding brackets in a manner whereby the brackets cannot be casually separated from the disc, but allowed oscillating motlon so that either side of the disc can be properly inspected.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and where- 1n:-
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a display rack constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of one of the brackets designed for supporting a record without its folder.
Figure 3 is a similar view of a modified form of bracket designed to support a record when positioned within its folder.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view through the bracket on line H of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through one of the drums and its supporting shaft.
Figure 6 is a plan view of one of the discs.
The rack forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a base 10, from which rises a shaft 11. Mounted upon the shaft is a plurality of spaced superimposed discs, each of which supports a plurality of record holders to be hereinafter described. Each disc is of a duplex character, that is, it consists of upper and lower plates 12 which are connected together by uprights 13. Each plate is provided with a circumferential series of openings 14:, the openings of one plate coinciding with the openings of its associated plate. Each disc is supported upon a collar 15 fixed upon the shaft 11, and a plurality of ball bearings 17 to facilitate the rotation of the discs as will be readily understood.
The discs are adapted to support a plurality of record holding brackets, and these brackets can be designed as shown in Figure 3 or of the design illi'istrated in Figure 4. In either instance, the bracket is of channelshaped formation in cross section to receive phonograph record, and each bracket is lined with felt as at 16 to prevent the record from being marred or scratched.
The bracket 17 illustrated in Figure 2 is semi-cylindrical in contour and is braced by transverse elements 18. This bracket is adapted to support a record without its folder, while the bracket 19 illustrated in Figure 3, is of substantially rectangular contour to support a record and its folder which is of a configuration similar to the bracket 19. Secured to one side of the bracket 17 is a curved strap 20 from the ends of which project relatively long and short arms 21 and 22 respectively. Depending from each arm is a lug 23, and these lugs are adapted to be positioned within the corresponding openings 14: of the upper and lower plates in each disc as clearly shown in Figure 3. The construction is such that the brackets 17 are supported on the discs so that each bracket can be easily inspected, although the bracket cannot become casually separated from the disc under any condition. Projecting from one side of the bracket 19 are arms 24 from each of which depends a lug 25, and these lugs are adapted to be received by corresponding openings in the disc plates in a manner stated in connect-ion with the bracket 17. Manifestly, the invention provides a rack by means of which phonograph records may be displayed to the best of advantage, and the record individually handled without any danger of breaking or scratching the latter. It is also desired to have it understood that the rack in its entirety can vary in size and any number of discs used in con nection with a single shaft as desired without departing from the spirlt of the mvention.
l/Vhile it is believed that from the fore'-' I going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I
desire to have itunderstood that I do not 7 phonograph record bracket, said bracket be 111g of channel formation in cross section, a lining of relatively soft material for each bracket, arms projecting laterally therefrom and lugs depending from said arms and adapted to be received by said aline'd openings of the disc whereby said bracket is sup ported for swinging movement.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising a phonograph record bracket of semi-cylindrical contour, said bracket being of channel formation in cross section, a lining. of relatively soft material, a transverse reinforcing member forming part of said bracket, relatively long and short arms projecting from one side of the bracket and a lug depending from each ari'n.
3. As new article'oif manufacture, aphonograph record bracket of substantially U- shaped formation, reinforcing members forming part of said bracket, said bracket being of channel formation in cross section,
a lining of relatively soft material, arms projecting from one side of the bracket, and a lug depending from each; arm.
4-. As a new article of manufacture, a phonograph record holder comprising a-member of channel formation in cross section, reinforcing-members forming p art of saidholde'r, a-lining of relatively soft materialarranged in said holder, arms projecting laterally from one side of the holder, and lugs depending from said arms. 1
5. As a new articleof manufacture, a phonograph record holder comprising a channel like member ofsemi-cylindrical contour, a curved strap secured to one side of said holder, relatively long: and short arms projecting later-ally from the ter-minalso'f said strap, and hooks depending from said arms for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
