UNITED sTA rns PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Au 21, 190
Application filed September 11, 1905. Serial No. wanes.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PORTER R. CLARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Mateo, county of San Mateo, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The hereinafter-described device is more particularly designated for use in connection with the display of ribbon-rolls, although the same is equally as well adapted for the display of goods generally;
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a front view of the device in elevation, the swinging holders having contained therein a series of ribbon-rolls. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the features set forth in Fig. 1 of the drawings and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating one of the rotatable studs 6 6.
end disks, the swinging holders for the goods to be displayed, and the spring-brake for holding the rotatable end disk in set position.
In the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate any suitable form of a base-plate, and 2 2 end standards or brackets secured to and upwardly projecting from the said base 1. To these end standards the end disks 3 3 are rotatably secured, the trunnions 4 4 of which disks extend through the standards 2 2 respectively.
To the inner face of the disk 3 is pivoted circumferentially' a series of hangers 5 and to the inner face of thedisk 3 a similar series of hangers 5, these hangers being suspended, respectively, from the studs 6 6, projecting inwardly from the disks 3 3. Each hanger adjacent its upper edge has a lateral slot 7 cut therein, which terminates in a circular seat 7, of slightly-greater diameter than that of the stud from which the hanger is suspended. By means of the slot 7 hangers 5 5 are permitted to slip onto the projecting Two opposing hangers 5 5, which constitute a pair, are connected by segment-plate 8 and two parallel rods 8, said plate, rods, and pair of hangers 5 5 comprising a swinging holder mounted to swing outwardly between the rotatable disks 3 3. The parallel rods 8 and bottom plate 8 form a runway or trough 9 for the holding of the article-to be displayed. In the present case the said article for display is represented as spools or rolls 10 of ribbon, which spools or rolls are held within the trough or runway 9 by means of the spring-clamp 11, the springarms of which clamp bear against the inner surface of the parallel rods 8.
To release any given roll or spool 10 of ribbon desired to be removed from either of the swinging holders, it is only required to release the pressure of the spring-arms of the clamp 11 and move the same a slight distance from the last spool or roll, so as to remove the pressure thereon, when any desired spool or roll within such swinging holder may be readily removed therefrom.
The swinging holders are held in any given position to permit of an inspection or a handling of the spools or rolls carried by the different holders by means of the spring-brakes 12 12. These brakes are secured to the end standards 2 2, and the free end of each brake bears, respectively, against the periphery of the rotatable disks 3 3. The pressure of these spring-brakes is just sufhcient to hold the disks 3 3 in any desired position, but not sufficient to resist rotation of the disks 3 3 in order to bring the swinging display-holders successively into view or in front of the operator of the device. By suspending the holders between the rotatable disks, whereby they swing freely as the disks are rotated, said holders will at all times assume and occupy a true horizontal position transversely of the device, whereby spilling of their contents is prevented.
While the invention has been described in connection with the display of ribbons, it is apparent that it may be used to attract attention to any articles desired to make a selection from.
By the use of the described device it is not required that a clerk display a numberof articles to an intending customer to select from. It is simply required that the disks be slowly rotated to present the swinging holders successively to the intending purchaser, said purchaser thus being given ample opportunity to carefully examine the goods, the clerk being saved the time ordinarily consumed by taking goods from the shelf to permit an inspection thereof and for the replacing thereof.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is
A device for the display of goods, the same comprising a suitable stand or frame, disks rotatably held therein, a series of swinging holders suspended between the said disks, fixed my signature in the 'presenee of Witand nfileanskffir holgling the goods to 1heliisi nesses.
