Cl. 224-46) This invention relates to a carry stand for phonograph records, that is, a device which serves as. a holder or rack for a number of phonograph records during periods when the records are desired to be available for use and which may be readily adapted for use as a convenient and secure carrier for the records when the same are to be transported from place to place.

While the invention is not limited to such use, the device herein presented is particularly adapted to the handling and transporting of records of the general type of the well-known 45 rpm. records which are of relatively small diameter and which are usually used in considerable numbers due to the type of material recorded thereon and their relatively short playing times.

Speaking generally, the device of the present invention comprises a pair of end wall members attached to base means adapted to rest on a table or similar surface. A rod or post member extends horizontally between the end wall member, in one position of the device, and a plurality of phonograph records are supported by the post with the latter extending through the openings in the records.

The aforesaid post is rigidly and permanently attached to one of the end walls and is adapted to be securely but releasably attached to the other end wall. The first mentioned end wall is hinged to the base and a rest member is attached to the outer face of the hinged wall so that the same may be swung to and rest in a horizontal position with the record-retaining post extending upwardly, so that the same and the records disposed thereon are entirely exposed.

The aforesaid rest member of the hinged wall is substantially in line with the record receiving post and is formed to provide a handle member, so that when the free end of the post is attached to the other fixed wall of the device, the carry stand may be conveniently carried with the records extending in horizontal planes and with the stack of records resting against the fixed Wall. Thus there is no tendency of the records to shift about on the post regardless of the number of records involved and without the necessity of any additional compressor or retaining means.

Also, again regardless of whether there is a large or a small number of records in the carry stand, the center of gravity will lie directly beneath the carrying handle, which is obviously the most convenient arrangement for carrying. As stated above, and again without limitation, the carrier of the present invention is most conveniently and most advantageously employed in con nection with relatively small diameter records which are usually used in greater numbers than large diameter longplay records, so that the height of the stack of records which may be involved may be considerably greater than the record diameter.

A preferred embodiment of the principles of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described in detail in the following specification by way of example. However, it is to be understood that ice this embodiment is illustrative only and that certah mechanical modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, the same being limited only as defined in the appended claims.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but on a reduced scale and showing the device in the position in which it is carried about.

Like characters of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing and, referring more particularly to Fig. 1, the numeral 10 designates a pair of inverted U-shaped leg members which form four supporting feet for the device when it is resting upon a table or the like in position to serve as a record stand or rack and thus provide base means for the device. Fixed to one end of each of the leg members 10 is an upstanding end wall member 11 and fixed to the opposite ends of the leg members is a plate member 13 Which comprises a mounting plate for a movable end wall member 14. The latter is hinged to mounting plate member 13 as at 15.

A round post member 17 is fixed at one end to the hinged end wall member 14 as by means of a flanged bushing attaching member 18, so that post member 17 extends perpendicularly from wall member 14. The post member is slightly smaller in diameter than the open ings in the centers of the phonograph records which the device is designed to accommodate.

The rigid end wall member 11 is provided with a flanged coupling 19 comprising a fiat plate mounting portion which is rigidly attached to theend wall member 11 and a projecting semicircular Wall portion 20. In the closed position of the device the free end of post member 17 is adapted to rest in the semicircular wall portion 20 as clearly shown in the full line position of the parts in Fig. 1. The adjacent end face of post member 17 is tapped to receive a thumb screw 21 which attaches the post rigidly but releasably to the end wall member 11.

A handle member 23 is fixed to the outer face of hinged end wall 14, preferably in registry with the flanged bushing attaching member 18 which attaches post member 17 to wall member 14. Accordingly, when handle member 23 is used to carry the stand with a stack of records associated therewith (such records being indicated in dot and dash lines at 24 in Figs. 1 and 3) the weight of the records and the carry stand will depend more or less directly from the handle 2-3, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 wherein the device is shown in the carrying position.

Handle member 23 serves a dual function as a handle and as a foot member and accordingly it projects from hinged Wall member 14 a distance equal to the vertical distance from the bottom of the leg members 10 to the axis of hinge 15. It will be noted by reference to the dot and dash line position of hinged wall member 14 and post member 1'7 which is illustrated in Fig. 1 that handle member 23 thus cooperates with leg members 10 to provide a stable support for a stack of records mounted upon post member 17 when the latter has been released from fixed wall member 11 and moved to the open position wherein the stack of records is freely accessible for removal or replacement of individual records or groups of records.

I claim:

1. A phonograph record carry stand comprising base means adapted to rest securely on a supporting surface,

a rigid upstanding wall at one side of said base means and a rigid supporting member at the opposite side of said base means, a companion upstanding wall hinged at its lower edge to said supporting member for swinging movement outwardly of said base means, elongate post means adapated to project through the central openings of phonograph records and fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall, detachable means engageable through said rigid wall for releasably locking the adjacent end ofsaid post means thereto, and a handle member at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means. and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the post means extending upwardly therefrom.

2. A phonograph record carry stand comprising elongate base means having a rigid upstanding wall at one end thereof and an opposed movable upstanding wall at the other end thereof hinged to said base means along its lower edge for swinging movement outwardly of said base means, elongate post means fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall and adapted to receive phonograph records thereon, detachable means engageable through said rigid wall for releasably locking the adjacent end of said post means thereto, and a handle member at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the record holding post means extending upwardly therefrom.

A phonograph record carry stand comprising a rigid open rectangular horizontally disposed base means having depending legs at its corners adapted to rest on a supporting surface, a rigid upstanding wall portion at one end of said frame, a companion upstanding wall hinged along its lower edge to the opposite end of said base means, elongate post means adapted to project through the central openings of phonograph records and fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall portion, detachable means engageable through said rigid wall portion for releasably locking the adjacent end of said post means thereto, and a handle member at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the post means extending upwardly therefrom.

4. A phonograph record carry stand comprising base means adapted to rest securely on a supporting surface, a rigid upstanding wall at one side of said base means and a rigid supporting member at the opposite side of said base means, a companion upstanding wall hinged at its lower edge to said supporting member for swinging movement outwardly of said base means, elongate post means adapted to project through the central openings of phonograph records and fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall, detachable means for releasably locking the outer end of said post means to said rigid upstanding wall, and a handle member at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the post means extending upwardly therefrom.

5. A phonograph record carry stand comprising elongate base means having a rigid upstanding wall at one end thereof and an opposed movable upstanding wall at the other end thereof hinged to said base means along its lower edge for swinging movement outwardly of said base means, elongate post means fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall and adapted to receive phonograph records thereon, means for releasably locking the outer end of said post means to said rigid upstanding wall, and a handle member at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the record holding post means extending upwardly therefrom.

6. A phonograph record carry stand comprising a rigid open rectangular horizontally disposed base means having depending legs at its corners adapted to rest on a supporting surface, a rigid upstanding wall portion at one end of said frame, a companion upstanding wall hinged along its lower edge to the opposite end of said base means, elongate post means adapted to project through the central openings of phonograph records and fixed securely to the inner face of said hinged wall to project perpendicularly therefrom to said rigid wall portion, detachable means for releasably locking the outer end of said post means to said rigid wall portion, and a handle members at the outer side of said hinged wall in general alignment with said post means and extending from said hinged wall a distance substantially equal to the height of said hinged lower edge of said hinged wall to support the latter in a horizontal plane when the same is swung to open position with the post means extending upwardly therefrom.
