JOSEPH H. BEAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LASTING-TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,255, dated July 29, 1873; application filed June 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BEAN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lasting-Tool; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improved lasting-tool,
which is adapted not only foruse in the ordinary manner, but also to grasp and draw the leather upon each side of the last at the same time; and consists mainly in the combination, in a simple tool, of two pairs of jaws, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved shanklaster as used to gripe the leather upon each side at the same time; Fig. 2, a view of the toolas used in the ordinary manner; Eig. 3, a side elevation; and Fig. 4, a view of one of the loose jaws detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A A represent the `halves of the tool, which are of identical construction, and cross each other in the usual manner, each being provided with a handle portion, a, a jaw portion, al, and a recess, a?, by means of which the two are adapted to be united together. B represents a loose jaw pivoted by means of its shank b in a suitable recess or opening, a3, in each jaw a1. Its bearing -face is suitably curved, as shown at x, to adapt it to slide free? the proper pair of jaws, and the loose jaws of each pair caused to press against its fellow by pressure upon the last. The leather is now i drawn into place by simply pushing the handles together, in which position they may be held by slipping the oval band over them. In this position the tool does not interfere with the operation of pegging.
The tool may be used also for the ordinary purposes of pinchers, the leather bein g grasped between the loose jaws, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. The handles A A having the parts a al a2, in combination with the loose jaws B B having the curved faces w x, as described.
2. The combination of the handles A A and loose jaws B B having teeth arranged upon their inner surfaces, the tool as a whole being adapted to grasp the leather between its jaws B B, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 27th day of May, 1873.
J. H. BEAN.
