Be it known that I, LOUIS BAUM, residing at New York, in the county and State of New i orlr, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tags, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to tags, and more particularly to data bearing tags which are used in the sale of merchandise for attachment to the article to be displayed for sale.

One object of myinvention, therefore, is to provide a tag which will be adaptable for attachment to a garment or other article of apparel, which shall provide means for attachment to the garment, and further, means by which the garment can be gathered together and held in gathered relation by the tag. It will be understood that in displaying garments, particularly womens dresses,

these are hung on hangers, such as are commonly known as coat hangers, the garments being supported only at the shoulders and hanging loosely therefrom, so as to produce a looseand unattractive appearance, inasmuch as the garment is not drawn in at the waist so as to give the same effect as when worn. This loose, baggy appearance in a great many instances interferes with the saleof the apparel and this is particularly true in the case of garments of large sizes.

My invention provides a means by which the tag which is ordinarily attached to the garment to give the style, size, price and other data, may be also used to draw the garment together to secure the waist effect, while at the same time this gathering in, and the fold thereby produced, is concealed from sight.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.

WVith referencenow to the drawing, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes a tagmade in this case in the form of a shield, although it will be understood that any other form may be adapted, as desired.

The tag is provided with a solid body portion, designated as 2, which is slotted as shown, so as to provide bifurcated extensions 33. The slot. as shown, extends from the edge of the tag inwardly substantially along the median line, and has a relativelv wide mouth indicated at4=and a narrow bottom 5. it will be seen that the slot being substantially wedge-shaped, provides a means by which a fold of the garment may be inserted and retained therein.

Secured to the tag at the point 6. opposite the slot, there is provided a flexible attaching means 7, such as a cord, by which the tag is to be attached to the garment in the usual manner. It will be understood that the tag may be made of pasteboard, or other material which has sutiicient stiffness to retain the fold of the garment aswill be later explained.

In order to use the tag so as to produce the desired slenderizing effect, it is attached to the garment by means of the cord, which may be attached, as indicated at S. The is preferably used on the back of the garment, as in Figure 3, so as to be concealed from view when the garment is displayed on a hanger. The garment is now drawn in along the waistline so as to form an inverted plait or fold 9, and the tag is slipped over the slack of the garment. in such away that the slot engages the folded portions 10 and retains the garment in the gathered position. This gathering in is done by means or" the belt if the garment is so provided.

The slack is then concealed behind the body portion of the tag, and the tag itselt' being mounted on the back of the garment,

the effect from the front is to give the gar ment a distinctly slender waistline, the fold,

and the slotted portion of the tag both being hidden from view from the front.

It will be seen by comparison of Figures 2 and 3 that the garment which has been gathered in by means of the tag has a far more attractive appearance than is possible Without its use. The garment hanging loosely in Figure 2- has a baggy appearance which is not at all like that of the dress when actually in use, and the long loose lines interfere seriously with the sale. However, by means of my tag, I am able to draw the garment in as it would appear on the wearer and this simulation of actual use is of great advantage to the dealer.

After the garment has been displayed and the sale made, the tag is then removed, and

7 may be readily used again as many times, as

may be desired.

As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

I Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A tag for holding a garment in gathered relation, comprising a body portion, flexible means therein to be attached to said garment, and rigid securing means in said body portion, adapted to engage a fold of a part of said garment and to be concealed. by said part when in operative position.

2. A tag for holding a garment in gath ered relation, comprising a body portion, and flexible securing means attached thereto, said body portion being relatively broad and having a wedge-shaped slot therein adapted to engage an inverted told of a part of said garment, said slot and the portions of said body portion adjacent thereto being concealed by said part when said tag is in operative position.

3. A tag for holding a garment in gathered relation, comprising a body portion, flexible means therein to be attached to said garment, rigid attaching means in said body portion adapted to engage an inverted fold of a part of said garment, whereby to conceal said fold behind the body portion of said tag and toconceal said rigid attaching means behind the part of said garment.

A tag for holding a garment in gathered relation, comprising a body portion provided with flexible means to be attached to said garment and rigid attaching means in said body portion whereby to engage a fold of a part of said garment, the body portion of said tag being relatively broad whereby to conceal said fold, and the rigid attaching means being so positioned therein as to permit said means to be concealed by said part When in operative position.

5. A tag for holding agarment in gathered relation, comprising a bifurcated body portion provided with flexible means to be attached to said garment at one side thereof, the slot defining said bifurcated ends having a wide mouth and tapering sides and being adapted to engage an inverted told of said garment at a point spaced laterally from the point of attachment of said flexible means, said fold being concealed behind said body and said bifurcated ends beingconcealed behind a portion of the garment adjacent the fold.

6. A tag for holding a garment in gathered relation, comprising a body portion having a data carrying space thereon, flexible means on said portion to be attached to said garment, and a bifurcated extension defined by a slot adapted to engage an in verted fold of said garment, whereby to conceal the material in the fold beneath said extension, and to conceal said extension behind the material of the garment adjacent saidfold.
