Be it known that I, ANTON ZUBRYD, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hidden Pencils, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and usefulimproveinents in article holders and particularly to a class of article carriers commonly known as the body and belt attached type.

The primary object of'the invention is to provide an article carrier in the nature of a belt adapted to encircle the, waist line or wrist of a person and embodying an extensible holder for pens, pencils, knives or the like removably fitted within and flexibly connected with a case so that the device may be conveniently carried in a compact form when the article is not in use and whereby the article may be readily employed when desired.

With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

the provision of a belt 5 of the desired length to conveniently encircle the waist line or the wrist of a person and provided with a buckle 6 or the like for detachably connecting the ends of the same. The intermediate portion of the belt 5 is preferably formed into folds 7 of tubular form adapted to snugly receive tubular article carrying cases 8 which are of the same general construction but which may be utilized for the carrying of different kinds of articles having difierent lengths. A pair of clips 9 may be associated with the end ones of the tubular folds 7 for engaging a watch 10 so asto retain the latter in position to be conveniently seen for ascertaining the time.

The constructions of the cases 8 and the method of utilizing the same for carrying articles such as a pencil or the like being identical, specific description of one of the same will suflice. As shown clearly in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive each of the cases 8 comprises a tube open at one end and provided with a flange as at 9 and provided'with a transverse hollow head. 10 at the other end in which is suitably journaled a spring drum 11 of any well known or preferred construction which drum has one end of a flexible member or string 12 attached thereto with said string ,normally wound thereon but capable of being unwound therefrom against the action of the spring of the same. A hollow elongated article carrying handle 13 is normally withdrawn into the case 8 by means of the spring drum l1 and cord 12 by reason of the connection of said cord with the inner end of the article 14 of said handle 13, the cord 12 being passed through a suitable opening provided in the inner end of the handle 13 as clearly shown in Fig. l. As shown in this figure, the article 14: may consistin a pencil with the pointed end of the same disposed-normally inwardly of the open outer end of the handle 13 and with the cord 12 attached to the ferrule 15 which carries the eraser 16, and this ferrule is provided with external screw threads so that the same may be threaded into the externally threaded portion 17 of the handle 13 for rigidly holding the pencil when required for use. It will be seen that the pencil may be entirely threaded out of the handle 13 when the eraser 16 is to be used, and in order to permit use of the pencil without the drum l1 exerting a tension thereon, the flange 9 is preferably provided with a pair of adjacent slits 18 to provide a tongue with which the cord 12 may be engaged as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.

The inward movement of the handle 13 into the case 8 is limited by means of a slidable stop 19 which is movable in a longi tudinal elongated slot 20 provided in the case S and which forms a follower having a finger piece upon its outer end for convenience in ejecting the outer end of the handle 13 slightly outwardly of the outer end of the case 8 so that said handle may then be readily grasped for entirely withdrawing the same as shown in Fig.

The article 14 may be ejected through the open end of the handle 13 by means of another follower 21 similar to the follower 19 which is slidably carried by the handle in the longitudinal elongated slot 22 thereof, the follower 21 being adapted to engage the inner end of the article 14; and bein capable of outward movement so as to force the article through the open end of the handle 13 whereby it may then be rotated for causing engagement of the threads of the ferrule 15 and the end 17 of the handle 13 as shown in Fig. 3. lVhen the article and handle are thus connected they operate or are utilized-as asingle unit although the article may be entirely disengaged from the handle for utilizing the eraser 16 should the article he in the nature of a pencil as shown.

In view of the foregoing description it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and ap preciated by those skilled in the art.

Minor changes may be made in the invention Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

lVhat is claimed as new is:-

1.. In an article carrier of the class described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound. upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retraeted entirely within said case, and a follower carried by and movable lon gitndin ally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case.

2. In an article carrier of the described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, and a folscribed, a case of elongated tubular form having a springdrum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, and a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejectingthe outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, thelast named end of the case being provided with means for engaging said flexible member when the latter is withdrawn with the handle for holding the spring drum under tension, said last named means including a tongue extending laterally from the end of the case.

l. In an article carrier of the, class described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, an article movable into and out of said handle and directly attached to said flexible member whereby the article is normally retained within the handle, and means carried by the handle and movable longitudinally of the latter for ejecting the article through the outer end of said handle.

5. In an article carrier of the classdescribed, acase of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in oneend through. theouter end of said handle, said i last named means including a follower normally engaging the inner end of the article at the inner end of the handle.

6. In an article carrier of the class described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spr ng drum journaled in oneeend thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, an article movable into and out of said handle and directly attached to said flexible member whereby the article is normally retained within. the handle, means carried by the handle and movable longitudinall y of the latter for ejecting the article through the outer end of said handle, said last named means including a follower normally engaging the inner end of the article at the inner end of the handle, said flexible member comprising a cord passing through the inner end of the handle whereby movement of the cord and the article relative to the handle may be had, and means for rigidly connecting the outer end of the handle with the inner end or" the article.

7. In an article carrier of the class described, a case of elongated. tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same ie tracted entirely within said case, a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, an article-movable into and out of said handle and directly attached to said flexible member whereby the article isnormally retained within the handle, means carried by the handle and movable longitudinally of the latter for ejecting the article through the outer end of said handle, said last named means including a follower normally engaging the inner end of the article at the inner end of the handle, said flexible member comprising a cord passing through the inner end of the handle whereby movement of the cord and the article relative to the handle may be had, and means for rigidly connecting the outer end of: the handle with the inner end of the article, said last named means embodying cooperating external and internal threads respectively provided upon the article and the handle.

8. In an article carrier of the class described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected. with said flexible member whereby the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, an article movable into and out of said handle and directly attached to said flexible member whereby the article is normally retained within the handle, means carried by the handle and movable longitudinally of the latter for ejecting the article through the outer end of said handle, said last named means including a follower normally engaging the inner end or the article at the inner end of the handle, said flexible member comprising a cord passing through the inner end of the handle whereby movement of the cord and the article relative to the handle may be had, and means for rigidly connecting the outer end of the handle with the inner end of the article, said last named means embodying cooperating external and internal threads respectively provided upon the article and the handle and permitting disconnection of the article from the handle while attached to said cord.

9. In an article carrier of the class described, a case of elongated tubular form having a spring drum journaled in one end thereof, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, an article carrying handle connected with said flexible member where by the drum normally retains the same retracted entirely within said case, and a follower carried by and movable longitudinally of the case for ejecting the outer end of the handle partially through the other end of said case, said case having a transverse hollow head within which said drum is journaled.
