- UNITED f. sra-rss neus r. nimm, v'or' PATEN-'rcarica-f GLBHENT FASTEm Specification of Letten Patent.
Patented Mar.' 28, 1922.
Application med lay 13, 1920. Serial No. 380,998.
To all wlmmz'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, ANeUs F. HANNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit Vof Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Ilinois, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Garment Fasteners, of whic the following is a' specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment fasteners, and has for its object the provision of a garment fastener which is simple in structure, economic of manufacture and highly efficient in use. Another object is the provision of a garment fastener which may be quickly and easil detached from the garment with whic used.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.-
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1, is an elevation showing one side of the invention,
Fig. 2, an elevation showing the opposite side of the invention,
Fig. 3, a plan view of the 'blank from which the invention is made, and
Fig. 4, an elevation illustrating the invention 1n use.
The invention is desi ned primarily for use with butchers and akers aprons and the like, but may be convenient y and as efficientl used to fasten any garment in which a jacent meeting edges are provided with buttonholes.
The preferred form ofconstruction comrises a tape or string 7 to one end of which 1s fastened atab or strop. The tab comconverges to a central joining prises wings 8 and 9, the inner end of which portion 10. Projecting laterally from opposite sides of the portion 10 are arms 11 and 12. Formed at opposite edges of the member 8 are extensions or fiaps 13 and 14. The entire device is struck up from a blank, such as shown in Fig. 3. In formin the device, the member 9 is folded upon t e member 8, thereby curling the members 11 and 12. The fiaps 13 and 11 are then bent over upon the member 9 so as to clinch the same 1n position and firmly retain it, the flexible element 7 being positioned upon the member 8 pre vious to the folding of the member 9 thereon. After the members 13 and 14 .have been flattened upon the member-9, suitable retaining means 15 may be inserted.l through the fiaps for retaining 'the member 7 in engaging position between the members 8 and 9. After the device is positioned upon the fiexiblemember 7, the arms 11 and 12 are curved, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for'the purpose of rendering the removaly of the tab from a buttonhole more difficult. In use, the arms 11 and 12 are projected through a buttonhole 16 formed in the fabric 17 of the garment. The opposite end of the flexible element 7 is then inserted through a buttonhole in the meetin edge of the garment and the garment tie thereby.
With a device such as described the garment is secured in amanner similar to the manner now used, and the strings are decincaeo, rumors, AssxeNon or oms-mr. 'ro Laxman am, or einem, rumors tachable therefrom so that `the Same may be i removed u on laundering, thus eliminating any possibility of the strmgs becomin torn from the garments during the laun ering process. It is also tobe noted that with the use of my invention, no omets are necessary in the fabric, and t erefore, liability of injuring the mangle through which the garments are passed, is greatly diminished.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations v and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. A garment fastener comprising a flexible element; a tab struck up from a single strap of metal, having one end embracing the other and both being clamped upon one end of said element; and arms projecting laterally from said tab and integral therewith, and adapted for engagement in a buttonhole, substantially as described.
2. A garment fastener comprising a flexible element; a tab comprising a pair of wings secured to ether and adapted for folding upon said exible element; means for securing said wings in `clamping engagement with said element; and arms prolecting laterally from and integral with one vend of said wings, adapted for engagement in a buttonhole, substantially as described.
3. A garment fastener comprising a flexible element; a tab having a pair of wings folded together upon said element, ,the side ed s of one wing clampingh7 engaging the si e edges of the other; am arcuate arms projecting from the folded portion of said tab adapted for engagement in a but-tonhole of the garment with which used, substantially as described. l
4. A garment fastener comprising a tab having a pair of wings struck from a single piece of metal and ada )ted for folding one upon the other; a exible element adapted for insertion between said wings when the same are in folded position; flaps projecting from the sides o one; of said wings for clinching the other of said wings in clamping engagement with said flexible element; and means projecting from one end of said tab adapted for engagement in a bnttonhole of a garment with which used, substantially as described.
5. A garment fastener comprising a tab having a pair of wings struck from a single piece of metal and adapted for folding one upon the other; a flexible element adapted for insertion between said wings when the same are in folded position;fiaps projecting from the sides of one of said wings for clinehing the other of said wings in clamping engagement with said fiexible element; and arms integral with and r0- jecting laterally from one end of said wings for vengagement in a buttonhole of the garment with Awhich used, substantialb7 as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
