PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 141,082, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, EDWARD S. SAXTON, of Greenfield, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Founders, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved pounder taken through the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is an improvement upon the clothes-ponnder for which Letters Patent were issued to Ezra Pollard, December 28, 1808, and consists in a wooden block provided with a central vertical hole and with two circular concentric rows of holes, between which a circular communicating groove is formed to allow the air to enter and escape from the inner row of holesthrough openings in the outer row or in the side of the block, all as hereinafter described.
A represents a solid wooden block, cylindrical or slightly tapering in form, contracted or tapered in its upper part to make it lighter. In the face of the block A, at a little distance from its circumference, is formed a circle of round holes, B, about one inch in diameter and four and a half inches deep. 0 are holes leading in through the side of the block A into the holes B near their inner ends. D is a circle of holes one inch in diameter and two slightly tapered to receive thehandle G, which is secured in place by a pin, H, passing through the upper part of the block A and through the said handle G. The upper and lower ends of the block A are strengthened by the metallic bands Iand J to prevent the said block from splitting. I
The pounder is designed to be used in a barrel or other close vessel of suflicient depth to prevent the suds from spattering out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved pounder, formed of a wooden block provided withthe central hole F leading out through the top of the block, the two circular concentric rows of holes B and D, the shallow circular communicating groove E formed between them, and the openings 0 in the side of the block, all as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
