SPARK ARRESTER.
To all whom-2'1 may concern Be it known that 1, PETER PALYA, a citizen or the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Ari-esters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved spark arrester and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device so construct ed that cinders and soot may be prevented from passing out into the atmosphere thus doing away with the danger of fire from hot sparks or cinders and further doing away with the objectionable smoke.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that a relatively large housing may be positioned about the upper portion of a smoke stack and supported in. place and to further so construct this device that the products of combustion may pass out of the housing through the bottom thereof after the cinders and the major portion of the soot has been deposited in the hous 1n another object of the invention is to so construct this device that air may be fed into the stack to increase its drawing power.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that it will be very simple in construction and comprising a comparatively few number of parts.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the improved device.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and looking downwardly.
This device is used in connection with a smoke stack 10 and is provided with a base or foundation 11 positioned about the smoke stack beneath a chamber or housing 12 positioned about and enclosing the upper portion of the smoke stack. 'This housing 1 will be so positioned that the smoke stack will only extend into the housing for a. relatively short distance and preferably about One-fourth of its height thereby providing a great deal of space in the housing above the Specification of Letters Patent. upper end of the smoke stack. In order to support the housing there has been provided columns l3 which will be positioned at the corners or the housing in case this housing is rectangular in cross section. If the housing is circular in cross section the standards will be positioned at suitable points about the housing to support it. The horizontal portions 14: of a discharge pipe extend into the base as shown clearly in Figure 2 and communicates with vertically extending draw ofi pipes 15 which extend upwardly and communicate with the bottom of the housing or receptacle 12. These pipes 15 will, when taken together, have a combined diameter equal to that of the smoke stack thus permitting the free passage of the products of combustion through the smoke stack and pipes 15. Horizontal portions 16 of air supply pipes extend through the foundation and communicate with the smoke stack so that in case the smoke stack does not draw properly with this device in place air may be-forced into the stack through the pipe and thus the stack caused to draw properly.
When this device is in use it is set up as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the products of combustion will pass through the smoke stack up into the large housing 12. A por tion of the cinders and soot will remain in the housing and the remainder will pass down through the pipes 15 into the discharge pipe 14. This discharge pipe may be carried to any point desired where the products of combustion may be discharged into the atmosphere or back into the fire box of the furnace so that the soot and cinders will be consumed. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a device so constructed that the hot cinders will be prevented from being discharged directly into the atmosphere from the stack. If desired the housing 12 may be provided with an entrance opening closed by a suitable door which will be kept closed when the device is in use but which may be opened when it is desired to enter the housing in order to make repairs orclean the housing. 7
,From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the chamber 12 is solely supported by the columns 13, that the bottom wall of the chamber 12 is horizontal, and that the upper end of the stack 10 enters the chamber 12 through an opening located centrally in said bottom wall. It will also be seen that the horizontal portions 16 ot' the air supply pipes enter the stack 10 from opposite directions and are arranged in close proximity to the horizontal portion 14 of the discharge pipe, and that the base 11. will, as it engages and surrounds the stack l0 and the lower ends of the draw oil pipes 15 and as it supports the horizontal portion l lof the discharge pipe and the horizontal portions 16 of the air supply pipes, prevent these parts from having any relative movements and thereby strengthen and reinforce the connections between the parts lt and 15 and the parts 10 and 16.

In combination, a stack, a chamber supported independently of the stack and receiving the upper end thereof, a discharge pipe having a horizontal portion, vertical. draw elf pipes connected to and communieating with the chamber and said horizontal portion of the discharge pipe, air supply pipes having horizontal portions extending into the stack from opposite directions and arranged in close proximity to the horizontal portion of the discharge pipe, and a structure located below the chamber and surrounding and engaging the stack, the horizontal portions of the discharge and air supply pipes and the lower ends of the draw oft pipes, whereby to support such parts and prevent them -from having any relativemovements thereby strengtheniup and reinforcing the connection between said parts.
