Description

UNITED STATES ROBERT G. MESSINGER, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,009, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT G. MEssINGEE, of Norwich, in New London county and State of, Connecticut, have invented a certain Improved Whirlin g Toy, of which the following This stem B has an enlarged portion or head upon its upper end, forming a shoulder rest- 'ing upon the top ofthe shell A, so that, while the shell Ais held in the hand the stem B revolves freely within and upon it. E is a small cord, one end being secured in the handle F, while the other end passes through the opening a in the side of the shell, and, after winding around the stem withinl the hollow of the shell, is secured, through the hole b, to the stem B. D D are balls, provided with arms, which are pivoted,at their inner end, to the center piece C, so that each ball can swing around in a horizontal plane.
This center piece C has a hole in its center, into which the lower and tapered end of the stem is pressed to secure the center piece upon the stem.
This toy is used by holding the shell A in the fingers of one hand, and the handle F in the other, when pulling the string sets the top into rapid motion, and unwinds the string from the stem, when the momentum of the balls again winds it on, to be unwound in the same manner.
The rapid revolution of the balls gives them the appearance of a solid cylindrical rimmed Wheel; and each time the direction of their rotation is reversed they swing around and strike the center piece, thus producing an entire change in their appearance, and also a noise, all which is intended to attract and please the young.
It is evident that the color of the whirling objects may be varied at pleasure.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the balls D D, having pivoted arms, with the center piece C, to give momentum to a whirling toy, substantially as specified.
2. The toy herein described, consisting of the handle A, stem B, string E, center piece C, and balls D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witnesses: ROBERT Gr. MESSINGER.
