UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PENROSE H. ZEN BT 1WD ESTELLA S.VGARIVS, OF SOUDERTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
Application filed July 8, 1920. Serial No. 394,626.
To @ZZ whom 'it may conc-ffm Be it lrnown that we. PnNnosn H. ZnNn'r and yEsfriiizni S. GAius, citizens of the United States, residing at Souderton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmproveinents in a Pocket, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pockets for garments and has for its object to provide a safety compartment within and at the back of the main pocket equipped with a closure iiap which is stitched or otherwise secured at its ends to the connected side edges of the pocket walls, thereby normally maintaining the flap in closed position, with relation to the mouth or entrance of the safety compartment, to conceal its existence and prevent casual access thereto, as when reaching into the main outer compartment.
A further object is to provide a fastener for the liep arranged to react with the front or outer wall of the main pocket compartment to prevent access thereto or loss of the contents thereof but which requires an operation entirely separate and independent from the unfastening of the main outer wall, to unfasten the flap and permit access to the safety compartment.
llVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and ldescribed vand then specifically pointed out responding parts throughout the several Niews, the numeral 5 indicates a fragment of a garment having the usual 'opening or slit 6 therein forming the mouth or entrance to a pocket.
The improved pocket forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of the front or outer wall 7 which lies against the inner surface of the fabric 5 below the slit or opening 6 therein, the intermediate wall 8 and the rear or inner wall 9. The edges Vof the walls at the bottom of the pocket and at the sides thereof are connected by stitching or other means to provide the outer or main compartment 10 and the inner safety compartment 11 both of which open in the same direction and the mouths or entrances thereof are 'disposed in contiguous'relation.
The top edge of the intermediate wall or partition '8 preferably lies below the slit or opening Gand is normally engaged and closedv by an overlying liap` 12 which is secured to or forward integral with the top edge of the slit 6. The flap 12 extends downwardly a distance below the top edge of the intermediate wall 8 and into the compartment 10 and is stitched or otherwise secured at its ends between-the connected side edges of the several walls 7 8 and 9, as indicated at 13 whereby the fiap is normally maintained in a predetermined position overlying the top portion of the intermediate wall 8 and closing the entrance to the compartment 11. Y
A button 14 is sewed or otherwise secured to the central portion of the top edge of the intermediate wall 8 and is disposed to enter a hole 15 formed in the 'contiguous portion of the flap 12 whereby the latter may be readily and secured fastened in closed position. The contiguous portions of the front wall 7 of the pocket and the fabric 5') are also provided with openings 16 for receiving the button 14 whereby the main compartment of the pocket is closed and loss of the contents thereof prevented.
From the foregoing it is clearly evident that I have provided an improved pocket equipped with a safety compartment which is effectively concealed from the casual observer and is effectively guarded against unauthorized entry by the engagement of the flap 12. Furthermore, it is evident that by connecting the terminals 13 of the Hap 12 with the sides of the pocket, the flap is normally maintained in proper overlapping relation to the edge of the intermediate wall 8. When it is desired to obtain access to the inner safety compartment 11, the flap 12 is disengaged from the button 14 and is pulled upwardly as suggested in dotted lines in Figs.v 1 and 2, whereupon the top part of the intermediate wall 8 may be moved outwardly against the inner surface of the outer or front Wall 7*, as also suggested in dotted lines in` Fig. 2, to permit convenient entrance to the 'compartment 47. When neither ot the compartments is in use, the
' button 14 is passed through both openings 15 and 16 and effectively closes both compartments preventing loss of the contents Y thereof or possibility of theft thereof.
What We claim is:
The combination with the Wall of `a garment Yhaving va slitted `opening therein`V the adjacent edgesof the slitted opening'hav ing overlapping free edge portions,; of a the inner face of the lower portion of the double pocket structure comprising a front, an intermediate and a rear Wall dependingly supported from said slitted opening, the front Wall of said pocket beingseoured to garment Wall and having its top edge emv fastening means carried on the intermediate Wall of said pocket `and engageable with the depending edge portion of theupper Wall Vportion of the garment and with the ernbraoed edge portion of the front Wall of said pocket.
In testimony whereof, We aiiix our signa-V tures hereto.l
