IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKING-PIPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,940, dated July 15, 1873,' application led l March 5, 1873.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MORRIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specication Before my inventionsmoking-pipes had been made with a removable bowl, so that the fresh tobacco could be added upon the previously-ignited tobacco; but this construction is costly and difcult to clean and keep in proper condition for use.

My invention consists in a reversible bowl with movable covers at both ends, in con nection with tubular openings that lead to the stem, and said stem acts as a faucet to close the connection that leads to the upper end of the pipe, and open that which leads to the lower end of the bowl, so that the smoking can be continued, without relighting the pipe, by simply inserting fresh tobacco at the upper end of the bowl upon the remaining embers, then applying the cover and turning` the reversible bowl upside down, so that the embers Willcome uppermost and light the tobacco, the smoke being drawn away atv the bottom of the bowl.

This construction greatly facilitates cleaning, because the bowl and tubular passages are open from end to end when the covers are taken off. At the same time the pipe, when in use, can be operated from either end.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the said pipe, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.

The stem a and mouth-piece may be either straight, as in Fig. l, or curved, as seen in Fig. 2, and the bowl b is of suitable size and more or less ornamental. The opening c, into which the tobacco is placed, extends right through the bowl or end b, and the caps 'd and c are movable, and when in place t on tightly. The stem ais introduced in asocket,

f, at one side of the bowl, and the tubular passages 2 and 3 pass from the ends of the bowl into the said socket, and there is either g a hole or notch at the ends of these tubular passages to prevent the caps closing them.- The end of the stem a has a lateral hole, 4, that connects with whichever one of the passages, 2 ory 3, may be downward, so that the smoke will be drawn from the bottom of the bowl. I

The caps or covers may be made so as to admit air when turned into a certain position, so that the top cap does not require to be re! moved or it may be taken off when the pipeV W. H. MORRIS.
