To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis Born, a subject of Austria Hungary, residing at the city of New York, county of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Operating Means for Sash Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an operating means for a sash adjusten'the same being adapted, more particularly, for use on the. interior of an automobile body for raising or lowering the sashwvindow thereimalthough it is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to this special use for the r ea son that it may be applied for ad usting sashes in other structures.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the attachment of the operating device to the surface in a manner to harmonize with the upholstery usually provided as a lining Within the car body, and to produce a sim-' ple, eflicient and economical construction adapted to be assembled so that all parts except the operating handle are concealed from view.
With these ends in view, the invention embodies a base provided with a hub, a shaftactuator in the form of'a bushing mounted for free rotation within said base and the hub thereof, an operating on the slra fthctuator bushing for rotation therewith, and means for detachably locking the operating member and the shaft actuator bushing for conjoint action.
Other functions and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in [connection with'thc accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of my operating means for a sash adjuster applied to the upholstery within the body of an automo- Figure 2 is a vertical 2-2 of Figure 1.

In order that others skilled in the art may understand my invention, I have shown it in connection with a body of an automobile, wherein A is a art of a door, wall or other surface, and i s the upholstery applied as usual to constitute, a lining for the interior surface of Wall A. D is the base attached to the wall so as to be concealed, for practical purposes, by the upholstery Said base is in the form of a metal part comprising an apertured plate provided with a hub-ti extending outwardly from the plane of said plate. The hub d is formed with a male screw thread a? neat to one face of the plate, but on the interior, said hub is provided with an opening of circular crossrsection, see Figure 3. The apertured plate of the base is applied into contact directly with wall A, and rearwardly of the upholstery so as to be concealed thereby, the opening in huh (I? being in alinement'or register with the wall open- :ing a, see Figure 2, and this plate is secured fixedly to the wall by suitable means, such as screws 0?, which pass through apertures in ltlhe base plate and are embedded in said wa and the hub thereof- Said bushing exceeds the hub in length so that in the operative position of the bushing within the base one end portion of the bushing is flush with the base, whereas the other end portion of said bushin protrudes beyond the corresponding end of the hub, see Figure 2. Said protruding end of the bushing is reduced externally in diameter and provided with a male thread bushing being provided with a longitudinal recess e, the Wall of which is threaded. The bushing is provided with an opening 7 the cross section of which is square, or of other polygonal shape, see Figure 3, and into this square opening of-the bushing is received a square or polygonal part C of the shaft C, whereby the bushing iscoupled to the shaft for imparting rotative movement thereto.
F is the operating member in the form of a crank arm provided at one end with a sleeve F, said sleeve being internally threaded for the purpose of screwing it upon at 6, said threaded part of the -tery shoulder 7" being positioned for abutting contact with the hub. The bore of the sleeve F is enlarged and threaded at g to enable a cap G to be screwed into the sleeve and fo rm a finish for the operating member. and within the chamber formed by the .threaded part g is encased a coiled spring G, the terision of which is applied to the cap for arresting rotary motion thereof relativelyto the operating member. In the inner threaded surface of the sleeve is provided a recess h, the wall of which is threaded, and in screwing the sleeve of the operating member upon the male threaded part of the bushing, this recess h of the sleeve is brought into register with the groove 0' of the bushing the said registering recesses e h forming a threaded socket into which is screwed a lock screw H, the latter acting to make the operating member F fast with the bushing and to prevent the sleeve F of said operating member from becoming unscrewed and detached from said bushing.
J is a collar screwed upon the threaded part cl on the hub of the base, said collar bein positioned for clamping the upholsbetween the base and the collar, thus confining the upholstery in snug relation to the adjuster and imparting a desirable finish to the appearance of said adjuster with respect to the upholstery.
To apply the operating device adapted to be used for imparting movement to the sash adjusting mechanism, the shaft C is inserted into opening a of the wall for the square end 0 to extend through the upholstery, whereas the spool 0 lies rearwardly of the wall. The bushing is fitted into the base, and said bushing and base are positioned for the base to be in contact with the wall, whereas the bushing slips over the squared part of the shaft. The base is secured by the screws to the wall, the upholstery B is adjusted over the base so as to leave the hub 01 protruding, and collar J is screwed upon threaded part (i of the base for confining the upholstery in se cure relation to the base and to impart a desirable finish to the adjuster.
The operations described are performed without reference to the operating member,

but to complete the assemblage the sleeve F is screwed on the bushing until stopped by the contact of shoulder with the end of the hub, the lock screw 's now inserted for locking the handle to the bushing, spring G is inserted into the sleeve of the operating member, and cap G isscrewed into sleeve F, all as shown in Figure 2.
It is preferred to attach a knob to the free end of the crank arm F, as shown in Figure 2. To this end, a stem I is provided with a thread i and a flange i, the threaded part of the stem being screwed into an opening tapped into the end of arm F, and said stem being locked to the arm by a lock screw .j. A roller sleeve IT's fitted loosely on the stem so as to be free to turn loosely thereon, said sleeve being confined against sliding movement by and between the flange i and the face of the armF Having thus fully described the invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an operating device of the class described, the combination with a base having means for securing it fixedly in position, an a shaft member, of a bushing rotatably mounted in the base, said bushing having locking engagement with the shaft member, and an operating member having a fixed connection with said bushing, whereby the base and the bushing may be absembled and applied independently of the operating member.
2. In an operating device of the class described, the combination with a base and a shaft member, of a bushing rotatably positioned within the base and operatively connected with the shaft member, said bushing having a threaded part, an operating member attached to said threaded part of the bushing, a lock screw co-operating with the bushing and the operating member, and a cap attached to the operating member for concealing the lock screw.
3. In an operating device of the class described, a base member provided with a threaded hub, means for fixedly attaching the base member to be concealed by the upholstery, a collar screwed on the hub and clamping the upholstery between the base member and itself, a bushing rotatably fitted in the base member and the hub, a shaft coupled to the bushing. and an operating member having a threaded connection with the bushing and free from direct attachment to the shaft.
