DEVICE ron narrative cunra msf I V i Specification of Letters Patent. Patented B1 7, 1922 Application filed January 21, 1921. Serial No. 438,877.
ticularly to device especiallyadapted for use in alining the lower edges of curtains at the time of hanging, and the primary object thereof is to provide a simple and efficient device comprising a standard mounted on a base which holds the standard in upright position when placed on the floor, and an adjustable cross bar having means for fastening the curtains thereto. The device provided by my invention is inexpensive to manufacture, andone which may be taken apart and placed together in a compact unit, when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a scale on the standard of my improved device, adapted to cooperate with an edge of the cross bar for determining the height of the lower edge of the curtains from the floor, the same being extremely useful when it is desired to hang a number 01 curtains with their lower edges at the same distance from the floor, it being apparent that my device may be used both as a gage for determining the height from the floor and for correctly alining curtains.
lVith the above and other objects in view, 1' have devised the novel device for hanging curtains which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my novel device for hanging curtains as in use;
Fig. 2, a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on the line 2-2 in Fig. 4;
Fig. 3, a plan view of the novel device;
Fig. 4, a front elevation thereof; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the opposite side of the standard and cross bar illustrated in F 4, showing a scale On the standard.
10 denotes a base, 11 a standard secured to the base by a hinge 12, or. other suitable means, and 13 a cross bar adjustable on the standard. Means, as a hook 14:, is provided for the purpose of locking the standard in an upright position, the hook being attached to the base. and adapted to engage an-eye 15 screwed into the standard. The standard may be folded down onthe base and the cross bar removed, when the device is not in use, thus providing a compact unit which is easily stored. The crossbar is provided with a plurality of projecting pins 16, fixed therein in any desired manner, which'are "adapted to attach curtains 17 to the cross bar for the purpose to be described.
r l lhe cross bar 1S recessed at l8, preferably in tl e central portion so that the ends will balance, to receive the standard, the cross bar being slidable longitudinally thereon. The cross bar is shown as adjustably se cured to the standard by means of a plate 19 secured to the cross piece over recess 18 and having integral with it, or attached thereto, a spring 20 which bears against the bottom of a groove v21 formed in the standard. A convenient and practicable way of forming the spring is to, as illustrated in the drawing, make the plate 19 with a narrow tongue projecting centrally therefrom, and to bend said tongue so that it will lie adjacent the back of the plate, the bend affording sniiicient resiliency to keep the end of the tongue sprung outwardly from the plate. The friction of the spring alone, on the bottom oi groove 21, may be used to hold the cross bar in adjusted position, or a thumb screw 22, threaded in the plate and l'iearing on the spring, may be utilized to lock the cross bar in any desired position.
As shown in Fig. 5, a scale 23 may be provided on the standard, the lower edge of the cross bar registering with the scale to indicate the height of the cross bar from the floor.
The various parts of my novel device may be inexpensively constructed of wood or pressed metal, and are simple and durable. In use the device is placed with the base on the floor underneath a curtain pole 24, upon which curtains 17 are to be hung, the cross bar being positioned parallel with the pole and at the desired distance from the floor. The upper end of the curtain is passed loosely over the pole and the lower end thereof is attached to the pins 16 on the cross bar. The upper end of the curtain is then secured to the pole in any suitable manner.
I thus provide a simple device for hanging curtains, which is easily operated by one person, and which will aline the bottom edges without tentative adjustment, thus eliminating the'heretofore tedious work of curtain hanging, which has often required climbing up and down a step-ladder several times inorder to get the sides and centers of the lower ends of curtains in aline'm'ent. It will also be seen that with the novel device provided herein, it is possible to aline two or more curtains at the same time. My deviceis extremely useful where it is desired to hangcurtains, located at different windows about a room, with theirlower edges t the same height from the floor, the cross barbeing first fixed at the required height and used as a gage thereafter.
It is to be understood that the embodiment of theinvention disclosedherein is illustrative and not restrictive and that the invention contemplates such modifications in construction and arrangement of parts as may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims:
LA device of the character described comprising a base, a hinged standard, a cross bar having a recess to receive the standard, a plate over the recess, and means 'onthe plate for adjustably securing the cross bar on the standard.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard,'a cross bar 1 havinga recess adapted to receive the standard, a plate on the cross bar br1dg1ngsa1d recess and retaining the cross bar on the standard, and means on the cross bar'for attaching'curtalns thereto. 4;. A device of the character 'ClGSCllbBd comprising a'base, astandard, an adjustable" cross bar: having a recess adapted to receive the standard, a plate bridgmg said recess, a spring carried by'the plate and en'gagmg the standard, and a screw carried by the plate and bearing against the sprin 5. A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard provided with longitudinal groove, a cross bar having a recess adapted to receive the standard, a plate bridging said recess and retaining the cross bar onthe standard, a spring carried by the plate and bearing against the bottom of the groove, and a thumb screw passing through the plate and engaging the spring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
