UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEQ JOSEPH PANYARD, OF MUSKEGON, MIQHIGAN, ASSIGNOR d'F'ONE-HALF TO ADOLPH ARNTZ, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR PLUMBING WALL-PAPER, WINDOW-SHADES, 84c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,341, dated January 10 1888. Application filed April 14, 1887. Serial No. 231,810. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH PANYARD. a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Plumbing Wall- Paper, WVindowShades, 800.; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
This invention has reference to a device for plumbing wall-paper, windowshades, and similar material and articles; and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and com- 'bination of parts, substantially as will be here inafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical front elevation of my improved plumbing device for wallpaper, the Fig. 2 is a vertical side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the clasp or catch removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view with the level removed.
Like letters denote like figures. A
The frame of this device consists of a sheet of some thin metal or other suitable material, which is doubled or folded back upon itself so as to form two parallel or slightly-inclined sides, A and a, the width of the side a being preferably somewhat greater than that of "the side A. The outline of the sides may have any desirable configuration. This frame is provided near one end, which in practice will be the upper end, with a spring catch or clasp, whereby the device is enabled to firmly grasp the wall-paper, window-shade, or other article after the edge of the latter has been placed between the sides A and a and properly adjusted therein. In arranging this catch or clasp an elongated slot is punched in the side A, the metal within the slot being turned out ward at either end to form parallel lugs B 13. Between these two lugs is placed a bar or plate, 0, which serves as the catch proper, and is formed with lugs, whereby it is pivoted to the lugs B B by means of the pin or rivet b. The plate 0 is located transversely to the side A, and one end is bent at an angle, so as to pass through and work freely in a slot, e,.in
parts in all the the side A. This bent end of the plate 0 is serrated or formed with a series of sharp points, and it rests normally against the inner face of the side or, entering a groove in said side, if desired, and in a position at right angles thereto, this position of the plate being maintained by means of the spring a, which is wound about the pin b, so as to be tensioned between the plate 0 and side A in the manner shown, thus keeping the serrated end held properly against the side a.
' The lower end of the device carries a horizontally-situated spirit-level, D, secured to the plate in any suitable manner. locate this level on the bottom edge of the side A, as shown, and embed it in a cylindrical I preferably tube on said edge, (see Fig. 2,) any kind of plastic substance being used to keep the level securely fastened inside of said tube. The upper part of the cylinder is provided with a slot, as shown at 01, so as to enable the bulb of the level to be seen. The spirit-level is at right angles to the line formed by the folded juncture of the sides A and a, and hence, when the level is horizontal, the line of this folding will be perpendicular, as will likewise be the edge of a sheet of wall-paper or any other substance or thing which may be in contact with this fold and upon which the device is clamped.
In using my improved device herein described for plumbing wallpaper, the operator grasps the device, depresses the outer portion of the clasp C until its inner end is removed from contact with the side a, and'the space between the sides A and a is open and free for the insertion of the strip of paper. The device is then clamped to the paper by passing the edge of the folded sheet between the sides A and a, aligning said edge in contact with the folded junction of these sides, and then releasing the clasp, so that it will grasp the paper andhold the device firmly thereto.
The construction of the frame of the device with the side a projecting ashort distance bcyond the side A, as above set forth, enables the operator to quickly insert the paper within the frame. Next, the operator hangs the paper on the wall, taking care to adjust the same until the bulb in the level stands exactly in the center, when it is evident that the edge of the paper will be perpendicular. He then fastens the upper half of the paper, removes the devices, unfolds the lower half, and completes the operation.
The use and operation of the device in plumbing window -shades or other articles which it is desired to locate in a perpendicular position is similar to that just described in connection with wall-paper.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described device for plumbing wall-paper, window-shades, and the like, consisting of a frame for receiving the edge of the paper or like article, having a straight edge, against which the paper edge may be aligned, in combination with a clasp for fastening the frame to the paper and a leveling device on the frame at right angles to its straight edge, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described device for plumbing wall-paper and the like articles, consisting of a two-sided frame formed by doubling a piece of sheet metal, in combination with a leveling device on one of the sides at right angles to the line ofjunction of the sides, and a clasp for securing the frame to the paper, substantially as described.
3. In a device for plumbing wall-paper and similar articles, the combination of the frame consisting of a metallic sheet bent to form the sides A and a, the spirit-level D, carried by side A at right angles to the line of junction of the sides, and the bent clasping-plate G, pivoted to side A, and having its bent end working through a slot in said side and ar' ranged normally in contact with side a, substantially as described. 7
4. In a device for plumbing wallpaper, the combination of the frame having sides A and c, the spirit-level D, at right angles to the line of junction of the sides, and the pivoted and springactuated clasp 0, all arranged substantially as described.
5. The combination of the frame consisting of a metallic plate bent to form the sides A and a, said plate being slotted at c, and formed also with lugs B B, the bent plate G, having lugs whereby it is pivoted to lugs BB, and held in place by a spring, 0, and the spirit-level D, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
