BACK-UP rosr.
iAOLSSO.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES C. NEIGH- BORS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Back-Up Post, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a back up post of the kind used in well drilling operations, and the invention aims to provide novel means where by the handle of the back up tongs may be supported whilst the drill stem is being unscrewed by the break-out tongs. The invention aims to provide a back up post which may be fitted in the rotating table or bed, the construction being such that the post may be removed when the occasion for the use of the post has passed. It is the object of the invention, further, so to construct the post that it will be reinforced against side strain.
Another object of the invention is to provide a back up post which may be folded out of the way, so as not to interfere with other work.
It iswithin the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
vVith the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a back up post constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an elevation wherein one side of the post is shown; Figure 3 is an elevation wherein the opposite side of the post is shown; Figure 4 is a longitudinal section wherein parts appear in elevation; Figure 5 is a fragmental front elevation showing a slight modification in the invention; and Figure 6 is aside elevation of the modification, parts being broken away and parts appearing in section.
The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a base 1, in
the form of a post, adapted tobe seated re- Specification of Letters Patent.

' movably at its lower end, in a bed or rotating table 50. At its front, the base 1 is supplied wlth an outstanding lug 2 constituting a keeper. At its front, the forward portion of the base 1 is beveled as shown at In the top of the base 1 there is a transverse groove 4 extended from the back of the post to the front thereof, the back of the post or base 1 having ears 5.
The top of the structure is denoted by the numeral 6 and is in the form of the post provided adjacent to its top with a forwardly extended hook-shaped support 7. A bail 8 is pivoted at 9 to. the upper end of the part 6, and constitutes a means whereby the device may be detached from the bed 50, be carried about, or be hung up. The lower end of the part 6 abuts as indicated at 10 against the uper end of the base 1. At its rear, the top 6 has a fin 12 received between the ears 5 of the base 1 and connected there to by a pivot element 14.. The lower end of the top 6 is supplied with a tongue 11 re ceived in the groove 4 of the base 1.
At its front, the top 6 carries an out standing bracket 15 having a seat 16 in its upper edge. In the seat 16 is mounted the end bar 17 of a loop-shaped latch 18 adapted to cooperate with the lug 2. The end bar 17 is retained in the seat 16 by a block 19 connected to the member 6 by a securing ele ment 20. The latch 18 is beveled as shown at 21, at its lower end, to cooperate with the beveled surface 3 of the base 1. A retractile spring 22 connects the latch 1.8 with the member 6, rearward swinging movement of the latch, under the impulse of the spring 22, being limited by a stop 26 on the part 6. The latch 18 is provided with outstanding side members 23, one of which is adapted to be engaged by the shoulder 25 of a dog 24 mounted to swing on one end of the pivot element 14.
In practical operation, the handle of the back up tongs is fulcrumed on the support 7 in the well known way. The spring 22 constitutes yieldable means for maintaining the latch 18 engaged with the keeper 2, the dog 24 constituting means for holding the latch positively engaged with the keeper. When the latch 18 is engaged with the keeper 2, the parts 6 and 1 of the post will be held rigidly in alinement, but, when it is desired to dispose the post in an out of the way position, so that it will not interfere with the work, then the dog 24 may be disengaged from the corresponding side member 23, the latch 18 being swung outwardly by means of the side members 23v until the latch no longer is engaged with the keeper 2. Then, the part 6 of the post may be folded dowrnvardly and rearwardly with respect to the part 1; on the pivot element 141. When it is desired to hold the parts 1 and 6 in alinement, the part 6 is swung upwardly and forwardly the beveled surface 21 of the latch 18 co-V operating with the beveled surface 3. of the base 1 to guide the latch 18 into engage ment with the keeper 2, the latch being held in engagement with the keeper, by the spring 22. The dog 2d may be swung downwardly and forwardly on the pivot clement 1a until the shoulder 25' of the dog engages in front of one of the side members 2-3 of the latch 18, and, then the parts 6 and 1 of the post will be held rigidly in alinement, so that the support 7 may receive the handle of the back up tongs. Since the tongue 11 of the'top 6 is received in the groove a of the base '1, lateral movement between the base and the top will be avoided, and practically all of the strain will be taken ol'l'ot the'pivot element 14 which forms a hinged connection between the members 1 and 6.
In Figures 5 and6 the top of the post is denoted by the numeral 6; the base or bottom of the post being designated bythe numeral 1*. The top 6? is provided with forwardly presented ears 16 and in the part 6 between the ears, there is a recess 61. In the recess 61 a compression spring (38 is located. A latch 18 is pivoted at 17 to the ears 16. The latch is provided at its lower" end with a transverse head60 adapted'tc engage beneath lugs 2 on the part 1 the latch being supplied with a rearwardly extended finger 62, projecting into the recess 61 and bearing on the upper endiofthe spring 1. A' back up post comprising hingedly connected parts; and a latch forming a releasable connection between said parts.
2. A back uppost comprising hingedly connected parts; a latch forming a releasable connection between said parts; and a dog movable on one of said parts and engaging the latch to hold the latch in interlocked relation to said parts. I
3. A back up post comprising hingedly connected parts one of which is provided with a keeper; a latch pivoted to the other of said parts and adapted to engage the keeper, the keeper and the latch being mutually beveled to facilitate the automatic engagement of the latch with the keeper when the parts of the post are brought intoalinement; and spring means for holding the latch yieldingly interlocked with the keeper.
4:. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 3 and further characterized by the provision of a dog carried by one of said parts, the doo' cooperating with the latch to hold the Tatch positively in interlocked relation to the keeper.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed mysignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
