' To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jnssn O. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Orange and State of Texas, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Elevators, of which the following is a specification, reference Ybeing had to the accompanying drawings.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character' having a positive latch which is readily released to permit insertion or withdrawal of the sucker rod.
A further object of the invention,y is to provide a substantial latching mechanism which is readily4 embodied in the structure and which is locked against accidental operation.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings,l wherein for the purpose of illusreferred embodiment of my invention an` wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of anfelevator constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken away;

Referring now more particularlyto the drawings, the numeral 10 designates ain elevator body substantially circular in form and Yhaving formed therein a slot 11 opening through one side thereof. The slot 11 has its lower portion relatively widened, as at 12, to accommodate the enlarged portion 13 of the sucker rod 14 which is located immediately below the squared wrench receiving portion 15 thereof.` Above the squared wrench receiving portion a further enlarged section 16 is provided which rests upon the upper surface of the elevator plate to support the rod. Y The up erfportion of the rod is of a size to snug y receive and lit the squared portion 15 and accordingly the sucker rod when disposed within the members has formed therethrough an axial bore 18 which communicates at its inner end "with a reduced bore 19 extending into the body of the elevator plate 10. Disposed within the bore 19 is a push pin 2O provided upon its periphery with rack teeth 21. The stem of the push pin extends `through the bore 18 which is provided with a shoulder 22 located within this bore between the shoulder 22 and the inner end of the bore 18. VA spring 23 surrounds the push pin and normally serves to urge the push pin outwardly. n
The .elevator plate 10 is provided with a vertical bore 24, the lower lend of which is enlarged, as indicated at 25, and opens through the bottom of the plate. The upper end of the bore 24 is reduced, as at 26, and opens through the top of the plate. In the reduced bore 26 is engaged one end of a gear pin 27 to which is secured a small gear 28 and a large gear 29, which when the -pin is inposition are disposed within the bore 24 and enlargement 25 thereof, respectively. The bore 19 opens into the bore 24 so that the teeth 21 of the push pin 20 engage a small gear 28Y and accordingly when this push pin is reciprocated the gear 28 will rotate within its bore and since the two gears are secured to the pin 27 both gears will be rotated. The plate 10 at one side of the slothas formed therein a channel 30 in which is disposed a rack bar 31. The enlarged bore 25 opens into the channel 30 and the teeth of the gear 29 engage the teeth 32 of the rack bar. At the opposite side Aof the slot 11 of the plate 10 a recess 33 is formed and the rack bar 31 has a reduced extension 34 adapted to enter this recess. When the plunger or push pin 20 is forced inwardly the rotation imparted to the gear 29 causes the rack bar to be withdrawn from the slot 11 yof the plate 10, leaving the slot open for the admission or removal of the sucker rod. When, however, the push pin is forced outwardly by the springithereof this rack bar bridges the slot and has its end engaged in the recess 33 preventing the withdrawal of the sucker rod from the slot. The lower end of the block 10 is covered by a removable plate 35 having a pivot opening 36 formed therein for the reception of the lower end of the pin 27,
In combination with the elevator block l provide a block frame comprising a main stem or shank 37 forked at its lower end to provide arms 38 formed of eyes 39 receiving the pivots 17, That arm 3S the eye of which receives the pivot 17 having the bore 18 formed therein has mounted thereon a pair of opposed plates 40 having aligned openings receiving spaced pivot pins 41 and 42. A lever 43 is mounted upon the pin 41 and has its end portion operating between guides 40 carried by the eye 39 of the arm, this end portion being in engagement with the outer end of the push pin 2O limiting outward movement thereof. Upon the pin 42 between the plates 4() a second lever 44 is mounted having its lower end portion beneath the upper end of the lever 43 and its upper end portion normally in spaced relation to the shank 37 of the frame. `When this lever is moved toward the shank 37 the lower end of the lever 43 is forced inwardly movingbefore it the pin 20, with the result that the gears 28 and 29 are rotated and the rack bar 31 withdrawn from the slot l1. The upper end of the shank is provided with a reduced extension 45, the upper end of which is threaded for the reception of a retaining nut 46. Between the retaining nut and the shank a bail 4T and thrust bearing 48 are mounted to provide a swivel support for the frame, It will be obvious that an elevator of this character may be readily constructed and will be durable and efficient in service and will likewise provide a positive lock against the withdrawal of the rod therefrom. lt will furthermore be obvious that .the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of considerable change and modii'ication without in any manner departing fronrtne spirit of my invention and l aceordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.

In a rod elevator, a frame, a block pivoted in the frame and provided with a slot, a member slidable within the slot and normally obstructing the slot thereof, a push pin reciprocable within the block, said push pin and member being provided with gear teeth, gearing connecting said push pin and block, means for shifting the push pin in one direction carried by said frame, and automatic means for shifting the member in the opposite direction.

the same from the slot, means carried by the frame for shifting said member in said direction, and automatic means for shifting the member in the opposite direction.
