SAFETY HOOK.
Application filed October 27, 1924. Serial Ito. 746,119.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINTFORD P. CUN- NINGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa an State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety following is a specification.
My invention relates generally apparatus, and in particular ments used in hoisting well rods, casing.
Ob ects of the invention are: to provide a hook for hoisting engagement with elevators attached to rods, having weight operated automatic hook latching means; to provide a hook of this character equipped with manually operated grip controlled latch releasing means; and to provide a hook of this character so constructed and formed that the latch and release mechanism are protected against accidental operation through fouling of well rigging.
With these objects in view, and such others as will be apparent from the description, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in' the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a hook constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention,
to oil well to impletubing and with certain parts of the mechanism in elevation; I Figure 2, a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3, a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Figure. 1, a vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Figure 5, a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In the. preferred embodiment of the invention, as shown, the hook is constructed of a casting 10 provided at its upper end with a swiveled link 11 for engagement with a hoisting cable in the usual manner. At its lower end the casting is formed to provide a hook 12, internally slotted to receive therein in nested r lation a trigger member 13 when the hook isla-tched.
The tip 14 of hook 12 is offset from the body of the casting which between the hook a d it conne th t e nk 1 i rmed unit in set position against action of of spaced side walls 15 and 16 connected throughout their length by a cross web '1 Adjacent the web 17 the body of the casting is formed with an offset hand grip portion 18 channeled to receive in slidable nesting relation a movable supplemental grip member 19 carrying intermediate its ends a rigid bolt 20 slidably disposed through the web 17 for a purpose hereinafter explained. A coil expansion spring having one end retained in a socket formed for the purpose in the supplemental grip 19 and the other end bearing against the inner face of the grip 18, acts normally to force the bolt in projected position through web 17.
The body of the trigger 13 is shaped to conform to the contour of hook 12, and is provided with an integrally formed upstanding shank 22 at its inner end, whic shank is reduced in cross-section and is enlarged laterally at its upper end into the head 23. The entire trigger unit comprising trigger 13, shank 22 and head 23 is slidable vertically within the casting between the side walls 15 and 16, being normally drawn upwardly into the position illustrated in Figure 3 by means of a coil contraction spring 24 connected between a lug 25 formed in the casting at the end of the spring recess socket 26, and a reduced web 27 on the trigger unit head 23. An integral stop lug 28 on the upper edge of head 23 serves to limit the upward movement of the unit. Beneath the head 23, the walls of the casting are connected by a transverse pin 29, which in conjunction with the web 1 forms a guide for the trigger shank 22.
Adjacent its upper edge, the head 23 of the trigger unit is provided with a keeper socket 30, which, when the trigger is in lowered position, receives the spring projected bolt 20 of the supplemental grip member 19, elfectively holding the trigger the spring 24.
The latch mechanism for the hook comprises a bifurcated latch member having a terminal web 31 and side arms 32 and 33 which straddle the shank 22 and head 23 of the trigger unit between the sides of the shank and head and the walls of the casting, with the terminal 31 disposed to engage the hook tip 1 1 in abutting relation when the l h is unction g, The inner nd o the and the casting walls with vertical slots 37,
