To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FrTcH H. BEACH and FRED S. BEACH, citizens of the United States,
. residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful IVheel. Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a scraper, and one object of the invention is to provide a novel spring means for raising the frame of the scraper and the scoop after the scoop has been loaded, considerable work being taken off the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for limiting the'forward swinging movement of the Johnson bar. Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the Johnson bar against movementwhen the scoop is elevated.
A further object of the invention is to supply novel means whereby the rear end of the scoop will 'be prevented from tilting either upwardly or downwardly. A further object of the invention is to improve the device that several of them may be yoked together tandem, to be drawn by a tractor or.
otherwise.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being undeistood'that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the a spirit of the invention In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation wherein one ground wheel has been removed; Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Figure l; Figure/l is a section on the line H of Figure 1, parts being omitted.
In the drawings the device is shown as comprising a main frame 1 including side bars 2 between which is disposed a loopshaped brace 3. The side bars 2 have rear wardly converging portions 4: terminating in parallel pa ts 5 between which s he d a be m Johnson bar;

The forward ends of the chains 28 areattached to the rear ends of retractile springs 30, the forward ends of the springs being secured at 31 to the cross bars 17.

The upper ends of the side hangers 37 are pivoted at 38 to the forward ends of the parts 25 of the member 32. ' the scoop 1 being lowered into fillin tremities of the parts 35 andare pivoted at their lower ends to latches 43 which, in turn, are pivotally supported as at 44 on the side bars 2 of the main frame 1. The latches 43 are adapted to cooperate with keepers 45 on the sides of the scoop 41. A loop-shaped retainer 46 is mounted on the rear wall of the scoop 41, the retainer extending beneath one of the members 35 of the Johnson bar 32, as shown in Figure 1 and extending above the member 3 which forms part of the main frame 1. The scoop 41 is equipped with a rearwardly projecting handle 47. A locking lever 48 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the rearward'ly projecting portion of the Johnson bar 32, as shown at 49. The lower end of the locking lever 48 is adapted to engage with a keeper 50 on the rear wall of the scoop 41. A retractile spring 51 extends between the lever 48 and the platform 9 and holds the lever engaged with the keeper 50. A latch 52 is mounted to swing on a bracket 53 carried by the rear platform 9 and 1s adaptedto engage with the rearwardly projecting part 33 of the member 32.
In practical operation, a person standing on the platform 9 may detach the latch 52 from the member 33 of the Johnson bar, the Johnson bar being swung upwardly and forwardly, the loop-shaped axle 20 being rocked,
position, and the latch 43 being engaged with the keeper 45. As the scoop 41 fills, the axle 20 is rocked, and the cranks 24 impart movevment to the radius arm-s 25, the springs 30 being extended. The result is that when it is desired to restore the parts to the position shown in Figure 2, this can be done with a small expenditure of effort on the part of the operator, the scoop 41 and the frame 1 being raised partly through the action of the springs 30 with a little additional effort The retainer 46 extends above the part 3 of the main frame 1, as shown in Figure 1, and, consequently, the rear end of the scoop 41 is prevented from swinging downwardly. Further, because the retainer 46 extendsbeneath one of the parts 35 of the Johnson bar 32, the scoop 41 will be prevented from swinging upwardly when the member 33 of the J ohnson bar is engaged with the latch 53. When the scoop 41 is disposed in dumping position,

3. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1 and further characterized by the provision of latch mechanism on the rear portion of the frame and engaging the operating member to hold the scoop elevated, the frame being provided on its forward portion with a stop which limits the forward swinging movement of the operating member when the scoop moves to dumping position.
4. A device of the class described, constructed as set forth in claim 1 and further characterized by the provision of latch mechanism on the rear portion of the frame and engaging the operating member to hold the scoop elevated, the scoop being provided with a retainer engaged above the frame and beneath the operating member, to hold the rear end of the scoop against vertical'swinging movement.
