IMPROVEMENT IN TOV AUTOMATONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,765, dated July 15, 1873; application filed June 14, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. CLAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Mechanical Organ- Grinder Toy; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation; Fig.

2, apartly-broken side elevation; and Fig. 3,

a plan, in part, of the musical box or organ, with the lid removed, and showing the connection of the automaton with the playingbarrel.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention consists in a combination of a an automaton figure, representing an organgrinder with a musical box or organ, and certain devices or attachments for communicating motion to the arm of the grinder, as if he were'engaged in grinding or playing the organ, also a motion by which'the head of the automaton is kept turning to and fro in imitation municated to it a natural life movement. The crank 01 is rotated by a pinion, g, on its shaft, arranged to gear with a wheel, h, on the barrel i of the organ, which latter may be an ordinary musical box that may be wound up by a key, or otherwise. The shoulder-pivot -or spindle e is attached to the arm 1;, so as to move with the latter, and is extended into the body of the figure and formed with a lever or crank, k, at its inner end. This cranked portion It is arranged to play through a slot or opening in the upper portion of the body, and projects up into the neck I of the head of the automaton, on one side of a central pivot connecting the head with the body, so that as the arm bis rocked by the crank 01 the lever or cranked portion 70 gives a lateral or turning motion, to and fro, to the head.

The whole toy may be set upon a stand and covered by a glass shade, as represented in the drawing.

What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the barrel 1', of the gears g h, the crank 01, and the arm b of the automaton, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the cranked shoulder-joint spindle c with the head of the automaton, fitted so as to be capable of turning the arm b and the crank d, set in motion by,

the organ, essentially as herein set forth.
