ELIJAl-I' EATON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Leners Patent No. 89,567, daad May 4, 1869.
TOY-VELOCIPEDE.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.;
Be it known that I, EnIJAH EATON, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in Toy- Velocipedes; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures. v
The nature of this invention consists of a two-Wheel velocipede, having an image representing a person seated astride thereof, his feet upon the cranks propelling the machine, his hands upon the steering-helm apparently guiding the course of machine. While the machine is steadied in an erect position and guided by a tedder-bar, in a given circuit, one end of this bar is-secured to the velocipede. The other end is secured to the upper end of an operating-shaft, which is im- Ielled or actuated by weights, spring, or clock-work,
In the accompanying drawingsvFigure 1 is an isometrical view of this invention.
ais a table.
b isa box, upon which the table is secured, in which any common mechanism adapted for propelling or actuating motion to a shaft, is arranged as a clock-movement, weight, spring, 85e., as iu common use.
c is a perpendicular .shaft arranged in bearings inside of the box b,:and to which the propelling-power is attached, in any of the common ways of applying power to a shaft.
- There are various ways and various kinds of mechanism for producing motion to shafts. I do not, therefore, wish to claim or be confined to any particular motive-device.
d is a tedder-bar, one end of which is secured to the upper end of the shaft c, and the other end to the frarne-work c of the velocipede.
f are the wheels.
g is the seat.
h is the rider.
Now, by winding up the machine, or the mechanism which actuat'es the driving-shaft of the machine, by the key t', and removing the key from its socket, the velocipede, with its rider, will travel in a given circuit upon'the table a, thuspresenting the appearance of a person actually propelling the machine in a circuitous route, greatly to the amusement of children, and but little less so to persons of more mature age.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and operation of this invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same therefrom.
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A- toy-velocipede, constructed and voperating substantially as shown and described.
