Improvements in Lasts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,-
Lasts of this type are much. subject to criticism because of lack of strength 'an'd rigidity, and it is a principal object of the invention to provide a last which will secure all the advantages of lasts of this type w thout bein subject to thesedisadvantages,
invention resides in a. n'0vel organization of last parts having a dividing cut comprising a re-entrant angle and a 'slmple and inexpensive link-bonding me :hanism".-v
- 'This and other features of the invention, COIIlPl'lSlIlg various arrangements and com-*- binations of parts will'be understood from the followin description which ,shows a referred em odiment or, the invention, seec'ted for purposes o f'illustrationand shown and a contact face extending from said cor- ..ner=downward and substantially rearward to the bottom of the last," and two non-par- 'allel links each pivotedtin both last parts arranged one above the other,- the lower bein the drawing in which,
Fig. l is a sectionviewof thelast in extended position; v v
Fi 2 is a'sectio'nal view showing the last in co lapsed positionay The-last has a fo'repart'lO- and a heel part 12, divided'b a cut which extends upwardly and forwar y, as-at 14;,to nearly the centerv .of the last,-then' extendsforwardlyas at 16, and then upwardly as at 1-8 on the foreom an intermediate point of the segment -,to the top of thecone.
In te mbnyw art. The heel part .secant face 20 extends The bondingmechanism "comprises fourrivets 22, 24, 26,28, the rivets 24, 26 being located approximately-in-the same horizontal plane, while the rivet 28 is considerably higher than the rivet- 122. These rivets are jolned by twolinks 29, 30,'as shown, the up per link 2? having a 111 32 arranged to enga e ai-spring 34-, seate' 1n a hole 36..
. en the last-is extended, the side 37 of the re-entrant an le 38 rests upon the sur face 16 and aflfor a firm bearing against torsional stresses, such as are imposed by the leveling machine. At the same time, the last 'is easily colla sibleby pressure and without the use; 0 special tools or jacks.
The sloping cut14 permits the lower secant face onthe-heel part to pass freely over the corner-on the forepart formed by the cuts 14 and 16, without}. binding, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. v v
The last described is simple in construction, not easily put out of order, and-cheap to manufacture. It is at the sametime rigid Accor ingly, a principal feature of the shoe-making and is easily collapsible'when it v isdesired.to' .w'ithdrawthe shoe.
against the stresses met with in machine -,,-.1EIav ing fdescribed'my invention, what I' claim-as new and desire to secure by Letters jPatent'of theiUnited States is A diyided last having a cut comprising a re-entrant angl of approximately 90 in the 'he'el'part,.a corner on the; fore art, fitting into said angle-whenthe last. 1s extended,
part upwardly and forwardly past the saidreo corner on the forepart to collapsed position. I ereof I' have signedjmy' name to this speclfication. I Y LELAND B. WHIPPLE.
