BOOT-TREE.

Be it known that I, OYRUs P. SHERMAN, of Boston, county of Sn Efolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Treeing or Shaping Machines for Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to treeing or shaping machines for boots and shoes of that class wherein the boot or shoe is treed or shaped from top to toe; yet the several parts or features of this invention may be used in connection with any other kind of boot or shoe tree.

The invention has forits object to improve the construction of the form or tree to the end that ample provision is made to compensate for slight variations in the size and contour of the top parts of boots and shoes, so that when the boot or shoe is on the expanded form or tree its top part will be properly filled, yet not unduly stretched;

In carrying out this invention the form or tree comprises, essentially, the usual parts or members-as, for instance, it may comprise a back leg part and detachable fore part mounted on a slide and a shin-piece or front leg part also mounted on said slideand the top part of the form or tree- -t'. 6., that part which receives upon it the top part of the boot or shoe 'is made yielding to accommodate slight variations in the size and contour of said top part of the boot or shoe. One way of accomplishing this result is to pro vide the front edge or face of the shin-piece or front leg portion with a yielding block or strip of rubber or any other suitable mate'- rial and to provide along therear edge of the back leg part a similar yielding block or strip of rubber or any other suitable material, said yielding blocks or strips serving as and constituting yielding portions which are disposed along the top part of the form or tree. However, good results are produced by the employment of either one of said yielding portions; but I prefer to employ both.

Figure 1 shows in side elevation a form or tree having a yielding top part embodying this invention, and Fig. 2 is a modified form of back leg part to be referred to.

The form or tree comprises, essentially, a back leg part Ct, a detachable fore part b, mounted on a slide, and a shin-piece or front leg part 0 also mounted on said slide, and an expanding device, all as usual in forms or trees now on the market.

The shin-piece or front leg part c is composed of a metallic base 0, having secured to its front side or face a yielding block or strip 0 of rubber or any other suitable material. The base 0 is provided at one end with a socket adapted to receive a movable pin 2 and at the opposite end is provided with a T-slot, which receives a headed stud 4: (see dotted lines) on the slide, thereby detachably connecting said base 0" to the slide; yet it is obvious that so far as this invention is con oerned said shin-piece orfront leg part may be detachably connected in any other desirable manner. The base 0 also has a pin 3 at one end, which enters a socket in the fore part. The yielding block or strip 0 may be secured to the base 0 by cement or by pins,- or both, and may be also additionally secured by and during the process of vulcanization, if desired.

If rubber is employed as the yielding block or strip 0' it may be compounded in any desirable manner to give to the finished product the requisite yielding character, or ordinary sponge-rubber may be employed.

The yielding block or strip 0 is herein shown as extended from end to end of the shin-piece or front leg part; but as it is herein designed that it shall extend along the top part of the form or tree it is immaterial whether it extends the full length of said shinpiece' or front leg part.

The back leg part a is formed or provided with a recess along its rear side or edge, into which is placed a yielding block or strip a of rubber or any other suitable material, and said recess may extend from the upper end of the top part of the form or tree to and include the heel, as shown in Fig; 1, or it may extend only to the heel, as shown in Fig. 2', the latter construction being preferable. The yielding block or strip a will be secured to the back part a in any desirable manner.

It will be seen that by providing the top part of the form or tree with a yielding portion or portions at either one or both sides the top part of the expanded form or tree will completely fill the top part of the boot or shoe, notwithstanding slight variations in the size and contour, and without unduly stretching said top part.

I claim- 1. A form or tree for boots and shoes having a backpart, a detachable fore part and a yielding top part which compensates for variations in the size and contour of the top parts of the boots'and shoes and an expanding device, substantially as described.

2. A form or tree forboots and shoes having a back part, a detachable fore part, and a yielding shin-piece or front leg part which.

compensates for variations in the top parts of boots and shoes, and an expanding device, substantially as described.

3. A form or tree for boots and shoes having a shin-piece or front leg, part provided with a yielding portion along its front edge or face to compensate for variations in the top parts of boots and shoes,substantially as described.

4. A form or tree for boots and shoes having a shin-piece or front leg part composed of a base and a yielding block secured to its front side or face, substantially as described.

5. A form or tree for boots and shoes having aback part and a front leg part provided with yielding portions whereby a yielding top part is provided which compensates for variations in the size and contour of the top parts of the boots and shoes, substantially as described.
