Be it known that I, GEORGE L. Romans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, havev invented a certaln new and useful Improvement in Sounding 'loys, ofwhich the following is a specification. p My invention relates to improvements in to s.

lhe object of my invention is to provide a toy adapted to be attached to a childs chair, the toy having a suspended ball that the child, while sitting in the chairmay swing to and fro for the childs amusement.

My. invention further provides a sounding member adapted to be struck by the ball to produce a sound, the ball being suspended by a flexible'device, such as a cord, which mayor may not be elastic.

My invention further provides novel means by which the positions of the ball and sounding member may be adjusted ver tically and laterally with reference to the chair.

Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The lower end of the rod?) is provided with. an eye 6 in which is secured the upper end of afiexible device such as acord 7*,which may be elastic,and which has its lower end secured to theball 1. o p p I The rod 9 is mounted slidably in a hori zontal hole in a block l() which is provided with a vertical hole in which is slidably mounted a vertical rod 11. p In theblock 10 are provided set screws lQand' 13 which may be employed to releasably hold the rods 11 and 9 in the positions to which they may be respectively adjusted.

The rod 11 extends through two holes provided in the arms of a ll-shaped clamping block let the lower arm of which is provided with a vertical screw threaded hole in which is fitted a set screw 19 which is adapted to bear against the under side of a shelf 16, such as is usually pivotally secured to the arms 17 of a childs high chair 18, the upper arm of the block 14- hearing against the upper side of the shelf 16. In the middle vertical portion of the Ushaped block I 4 is held clamped against the block 8 by a- 7 single nut 5.

The sounding member may be of any desired shape, in Fig. 1 it isshown as flat, and in Fig. 7 as having the central portion con- In the form shown in Fig. 7, the rod 9 may have a lateral notch 23 which is adapted to receive the adjustment endof the rod 3, thereby holding the block 8 against movement on the rod 9.

In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a horizontal plate 20, which is provided with a vertical .boss 21 through which extends a vertical hole adapted to receive the lower end of the rod 11. A set screw 22 is provided in the boss 21 for holding the rod 11 in its proper position. The plate may be secured to the floor by any suitable means, when it is desired to mount the device onthe floor.

The operation of the invention is simple.

I To vertically adjust the block 10, the set screw 12 is loosened, after which the block may be vertically adjusted on the rod 11.

Or the set, screw 15 may he loosened and the rod 11 vertically adjusted.

By loosening theset screw 13, the rod 9 may be adjusted lengthwise in the block 10, The child sitting in the chair 18 may swing the ball 1 until thering 2 strikes the sounding member 4, thereby producing sounds for the amusement of the child. Or the ring 2 may be dispensedwithfif desired. It the cord 7 used is elasticthe ball 1 may be drawn downwardly, and upon being released it will fly upward and strike the sounding member 4.

In mounting the device upon the shelf 16, it may be secured thereto in any suitable position. 'When the shelf isswung on the arm 17 to .which it is pivoted, the device will be carried with it so as to clear the front of the chair, so that the child may be placed upon or removed from the chair seat without interfering with the mechanism.
