BYWC'W ATTORNEY Patented July 15 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPIDER AND WEB SIMULATION James H. Countryman, West Middletown, Ohio Application March 29, 1950, Serial No. 152,660
1 Claim.
This invention relates to animated toys or novelties.
One object of the invention is to produce a structure which will simulate a spider in a web in form, structure and movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a supporting web which will be moved by the slightest atmospheric or physical disturbance to produce an animated effect.
Another object of the invention is to produce a suspension means for easily and quickly attaching the device to a plane surface, such as a window pane or windshield of a motor vehicle.
Features of the invention relate to the details of construction and combination of parts for facilitating the construction and assembly of the device.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. '1 is a front elevational view of a simulated web and spider mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of an attaching device with an attaching surface in section, and 1 Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a simulated spider with a part in section to show the attaching means.
As shown in the drawing, a web structure 5 is comprised of threads, hairs or other fine strong thread-like materials woven together to simulate the web of a spider. The web structure may be triangular in shape, with the ends of the threads I, 8 and 9 provided with loops, each adapted to engage a groove I0, in the shank of a stud l I, adjacent the head thereof. The stud l l is secured to a vacuum cup l2, which is attached to a plane surface, such as a window pane, to suspend the device in spaced relation with respect to the supporting surface.
A simulated spider I5 is attached to the radial center of the web 5. It is of a type commonly used as a lure for fish, and comprises a soft rubber body l6, rubber legs H, a head 18 and rubber feelers IS. A supporting post or wire 2| is secured in the under side of the body IS. A pair of transparent discs 22 of lightweight material are located one upon each side of the web 5. The support 2| extends throu h aligned openings in the discs 22. The lower end of the support is threaded to receive a clamping nut 23 and washer 24. The support 2| is provided with a struck up p 2 portion 25 to position the upper one of the discs 22.
The ends of the legs. I! and feelers i9 may each be attached to a barb 26 adapted to engage the threads of the web.
A small metal ball 21 is inserted in the body portion I6 to add Weight and balance to the structure.
In mounting the device upon a plane surface, the supporting threads are tensioned sufiiciently to retain the web structure in spaced relation to the mounting surface, and this produces sufficient resiliency to make the structure readily responsive to slight disturbances of air or mechanical vibrations. I
The device of this invention may be produced at a very low cost, can be easilyand quickly installed, and it produces a novel amusement for both children and adults.
Although I have shown and described my invention with respect to certain details to construction, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be unduly limited thereto, modifications being possible without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, a simulated spider web of flexible threads, a simulated spider comprising a soft rubber body and legs and feelers of flexible rubber, a supporting post attached at one end to the body, a pair of thin discs located one upon each side of the mid-portion of the web to receive the opposite end of the mounting post, and means on the post for clamping the discs against the adjacent portion of the flexible web.
JAMES H. COUNTRYMAN.
