Description

F. P. WILLIAMS. SHEET METAL DRAWER. PLICATION FILED MAYZ Patented Jan. 24,1922.
INVENTOR.
A TTORNE Y.
FRANK P. WILLIAMS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SHEET-METAL DRAWER.
Application filed. May 2, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK P. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Sheet- Metal Drawers, of which the following is.
ing turned-over side edges 6 and a twice doubled back bottom edge (Z. The side plates and rear plate are made from a single strip of sheet metal folded to provide the side plates 6 and f and the rear plate g. Each of these plates has a strip of metal folded outwardly perpendicularly and returned 'upon itself to form the reinforcing.
flanges e, f and g. The rear plate 9 is provided at the bottom with a rearwardly and perpendicularly formed flange The side plates 6 and f are provided with outwardly-extending side flanges f and 6 This enables the flanges f and e to be slid into the turned-back side edge portions .7) of the front plate a, thereby completing the side enclosure of the drawer.
The bottonilc may be locked in by slipping the turned-back hook Z at the rear of the bottom over the rearwardly-projecting flange j of the rear plate 9 and then forcing the downwardly-directed flange m at the front of the bottom into the twice doubled-back lock-seam fold (Z at the bottom of the front plate. The bottom plate is provided with side flanges 70 which slip into upwardly-turned folds 00 in the side walls, as is best shown in Fig. l.
A shallow reinforcing channel sheet 0 may be slipped in behind the front plate a and between the side walls 7 and c. This acts as aside wall spacer and holds the flanges f and e in place and also holds the flange m of the bottom plate 70 in place. This channel sheet is formed with an upwardly- Specification of Letters Patent.

extending flange 39 that looks into the upper turned-over edge of the front plate a and the ends of the channel are closed b the perpendicular folds When the knobs r are bolted in place by the nuts and bolts 8 this secures the channel reinforcing sheet to the front plate and completes the assembly of the drawer parts and locks the sides and bottom in such relation to each other and to the front plate that they cannot come apart without disassembling the knobs and taking out the channel sheet.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a sheet metal drawer, a front plate provided at its bottom with a. turned-up fold, side and rear plates, the latter provided with a rearwardly turned-out flange, and a bottom plate having its rear edge turned over into a hook adapted to hook over the turned-back flange of the rear plate and having a turned-down flange at the front adapted to be forced into the turnedup fold of the front plate.
2. In a sheet metal drawer, a front plate provided at its bottom with a turned-up fold, side and rear plates connecting the front plate, said rear plate being provided with a rearwardly-extending flange, a bottom plate provided at its rear with a turnedover edge forming a hook engaging said turned-back flange of the rear plate and having at its forward end a turned-down flange adapted to be forced into the turnedup fold of the front plate, and a reinforcing member engaging behind the front plate and bearing on the front of the bottom plate to hold the flange of the same locked into the fold of the front plate.
3. In a sheet metal drawer, the combination of a front plate having turned-over side edges and a folded-up bottom edge, side walls formed by a single strip of metal folded to form rear and side plates, the former provided with a turned-back flange at the bottom and the latter provided with turnedout flanges at the front engaging in the turned-over side edges of the front plate. and a bottom plate having a hook-like rear edge portion engaging over the turned-back flange at the bottom of the rear plate and having a turned-down flange at the front engaging in the folded-up bottom edge of the front plate.
4. In a sheet metal drawer, the combination of a front plate provided with side edges with turned-over portions and at its Ind bottom with a turned-up fold, side walls formed of a single strip of metal forming the rear and the side plates, the former provided at its bottom with a turned-back flange and the latter provided at the front with turned-out flangesadapted to engageunder the side edges of the front plate, and a bottom plate provided at its rear with a hooklike edge adapted to look over the turnedback flange ofthe rear plate and having at the front a turned-down flange engaging in the turned-up fold of the front plate, and a reinforcing member secured to the front plate in back thereof and spacing the side plates and serving to lock the side plate flanges into the turned-over side edges of the front plate and serving to look the turneddown front edge of the bottom plate in the turned-up fold of the front plate.
5. In a sheet metal drawer, the combination of a front plate having at its bottom a turned-up fold, a single sheet of metal for1ned into a rear plate and two side plates connected with the front plate, said side plates having at their bottom turned-np edges and the rear plate having a rearwardly-extending flange at the bottom, and a bottom plate provided at its rear with a turned-over hook portion adapted to engage over the turnedback portion of the rear plate andhaving at the sides turned-down flanges adapted to engage with the turned-up side edges and ha"- at its front a turned-clown flange engaging in the turned-up fold of the front plate.
. 6. In a sheet metal drawer, the combination of a front plate provided at its bottom with a turned-up fold, side plates looking into the front plate and provided with turned-up folds, a rear plate connected with the side plates, and a bottom plate looking into the rear plate and provided'with turneddown flanges at the front and sides locking into-the turned-up folds of the front plates and side plates.
'2". In a sheet metal drawer, the combination of a front plate provided with turnedover side edges and a turned-up bottom edge, side plates with turned-out flanges en gaged by the turned-over side edges of the front plate and also provided with turnedup bottom edges, a rear plate connecting with the side plates, a bottom plate looking into the rear plate and provided with turneddown flanges at the front and sides, said flanges looking into the turned-up edges of the front and side plates, and a reinforcing member fitting in behind the front plate and in between the side plates and above the bottom plate and serving to keep the side plates and the bottom plate locked in place.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
FRANK I WILLIAMS.
