Description

April W51 H. R. ASCHBRENNER 2,549,282?
CARRYING CONTAINER Filed Jan. 25, 1946 Patented Apr. 17, 1951 1 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARRYING CONTAINER 4 Henry R. Aschbrenner, Westgate, Iowa Application January 25, 1946, sesame. 643,225-
" lClaim. (01. 220-1) The instant invention relates to carrying containers of the type having handles at opposite ends and its primary object is the provision of a container that may be conveniently held in front of the stomach of the person carrying it and that has a shape fitting around that portion of the body to ease the lot of the laboring people handling such containers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a carrying container having handles disposed more closely to the body of the carrying person than the conical baskets now in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carrying container of inexpensive, strong and enduring construction and having an odd, artistic shape which makes a sales appeal in favor of goods oifered for sale in such containers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container which because of its downwardly tapering shape may be nested within another empty container, whereby a plurality of empty containers may be stored in a relatively small space.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novelty of construction, combination and arrangement of parts described hereinafter in detail and claimed in the subjoined claim.
In order to promote a complete understanding of the invention the preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of such embodiment.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the plane of symmetry indicated by lines 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail section through one of the handles and the side wall portion carrying same on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate like or similar parts, it is seen that numeral 2 denotes a bottom supported above the ground and having a convex front edge 3 and a concave rear edge 4 on the rear side, and rounded end edges 5. The edges carry a downwardly extending flange 6 surrounded by aflange 1 formed as a fold and extending upwardly from a fold line forming the bottom end of a Wall rising outwardly.
The wall portion 9 rising from the bottom convex edge is also convex and exteriorly conical while the wall portion ll] rising from the concave bottom edge is concave and interiorly-ibonical. The wall portions II rising outwardly from the rounded end edges of the bottom are exteriorly conical.
The upper edge of the wall has a shape similar to the shape of the bottom edge and is formed by bending the material outwardly and wrapping it around a reinforcing loop l3, preferably of solid steel. At either end of the convex section of the upper edge the part [4 thereof is not wrapped around the loop but around the straight end parts of a loop handle l5 adapted for insertion of the hand carrying the container (Fig. 3). This loop handle may be swung to the full line carrying position and in unused condition will depend from the beaded edge of the container as indicated in dotted lines. The handles may be made of steel or rope.
The container disclosed may be made in different sizes such as a half-bushel, bushel, one and a half bushel and two bushels.
As material for the container may be used metal, wood or plastic. The wall may be corrugated. The container may be carried by a single person in front of the stomach without exerting undue pressure thereon and may be emptied by using the convex portions of short radius near the handles as spouts. The downward taper of the concave rear wall portion permits unrestrained movement of the legs of the person carrying the container.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawing are deemed to fully disclose the invention.
While this disclosure covers the details of the preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is not limited to the exact construction shown and described so that changes and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A load carrying receptacle comprising a relatively small flat horizontally disposed bottom having a forward convex edge and a rear concave edge, the bottom being elongated transversely in the general direction of the forward and rear edges and being relatively narrow between the forward and rear edges, the opposite ends of the bottom being rounded, a forward upwardly flaring convex side for the receptacle and having its bottom edge secured to the bottom of the receptacle adjacent to the forward convex edge of the bottom, the top of the forward convex side being disposed a substantial distance forwardly of the forward convex edge of the bottom, a rear concave side for the receptacle and being upwardly inclined rearwardly and arranged in spaced diverging relation to the forward side, the
rear concave side being secured at its bottom to the bottom of the receptacle adjacent to the rear concave edge of the bottom, curved upwardly diverging ends for the receptacle and connecting 5 the forward and rear sides thereof and formed integral with such sides and secured to the bot tom of the receptacle adjacent to the rounded ends ofrtherbottom the receptaclew being open at its top andbeing' relatively deep, the rearconcavc side being curved to fit the body of the user of V the receptacle, and a pair of handles pivotally secured to the top of the receptacle near and" slightly forwardly of the curved upwardly'diverg-iing ends.
