COVER FOR DISHES. APPLICATRON mm AP R.29, 1920.

UNITED TATES PATENT OFFZ QQE.
WILLIAM F. ROGERS, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIG-NOR TO REE-ID AND BARTON CORPORATION, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
COVER FOR DISHES.
Application filed April 29, 1920.
T 0 all w from it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Covers for Dishes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a cover for dishes such as is commonly made of metal or plated-ware and is used in hotel service for covering the contents of the dish while being carried from the kitchen to the table.
The object of the invention is to produce a cover which while ornamental in appearance may be conveniently stacked or nested with a number of others for transportation, or in service where a large number have to be kept in a limited space, as in hotels or on ships or dining cars.
The features of construction by which this object is attained will be readily understood from the following description in con nection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a number of the dish covers stacked together.
Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section through the stack of covers, and,
Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional detail of the marginal part of one of the covers.
Each cover is practically an inverted open receptacle having a top or end closure 2 which is preferably flat, and a tapering side wall 3 which is larger at the lower open end than at its junction with the top closure2, so that a number of the covers may be stacked together or placed one within another as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In order to provide a suitable support for the covers and to prevent their hearing and wedging together on the inclined surfaces, and thus tending to mar the outer surface of the inclined portion 3, each cover is provided near its open end with a supporting ledge or shoulder l, (see Fig. 3), located at such a distance from the'open end that the external dimension of the side portion of the cover 3 at its junction with the shoulder 4c is not greater than the internal dimension Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1921.
Serial No. 377,622.
at the extreme end of the cover at 5, Fig. 3
as is indicated by the vertical dotted line in said Fig. 3.
The ledge or shoulder a is desirably made as shown by providing a band 6, extending around the open end of the cover which affords an ornamental finish while also stiffening or reinforcing the cover at this point, in addition to providing the supporting shoulder for other thereon.
In orderto facilitate the handling of the cover it is provided with a lifting handle 7 which bridges a depression 8 in the top 2 of the cover, and in order to accommodate the handle containing depression of a cover which may be stacked over the one in question the handle 7 is itself made concave or curved inward from the outer face of the top closure 2 of the cover.
When the covers are stacked or nested to gether there will be a small space between the top closures of the several covers, which in conjunction with the concave form of the handle containing depression or concavity, and of the handle itself, is sufficient to accommodate the handles as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. j
The covers are also shown as each provided with a band 9, around the marginal part of the top closure, which may contribute to the ornamental appearance and which serves to strengthen or reinforce the cover at this point and also serves to support the cover when set down in an inverted position, and thus serves to protect the top surface from becoming scratched or marred, as is desirable when the covers are silver-plated or have a highly polished surface.
By reason of the supporting ledges 4 the covers when stacked are in firm engagement with one another and can not rattle or rub together so as to injure the outer surface of the side walls 3.
What I claim is 1. A cover for dishes having a fiat top closure, and a tapering side wall, and being provided with a supporting ledge on the side wall around its open end, and with a band on the marginal part of the top closure projecting above the plane of the top closure.
2. A cover for dishes having a top closure, and a tapering side Wall, and being provided with a supporting ledge on the side Wall around the open end thereof, and With a concavity in the top closure, and a handie having its ends affixed to said top closure at opposite sides of said concavity and having its middle portion depressed into said concavity, substantially as shown and described. 10
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM F. ROGERS.
