AUTOMOBILE-Tor.
remore.,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June il?, 1919.
Y Application led July 11, 1917. Serial No. 179,876.
T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. ALVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the'county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky,`A have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle tops and particularly to automobile tops, the purpose being to provide an inner lining which may be readily applied to and removed from the frame of the top, and which'when in place will present a pleasing appearance.
A construction by which this purpose may be carried out in the most practicable Way is exemplified by the accompanying drawings, wherein: y
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a top having my improved inner lining applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, lookin toward the rear; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarge detail sectional view.
- Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
' The frame of the top includes, as usual, transverse bows marked 10,.11,12, 13, 14, and 15 respectively. These bows, of which there may be any suitable number, are connected with each other by longitudinal'strips 16, as usual. 17 designates the cover which lies upon the strips 16 and is suitably se- T he forward end of the cover preferably is bent back over a front transverse member 18 forming 'the hood or overhang at the front end of the top.
The inner -lining is preferably composed of two sections marked 19 and 20 respectively. The section 19 may be tacked to the bow members 1() and 11 at its opposite ends. The section 20 is preferably a continuous one and extends from the bow member 11 to the bow member 14 and'is detachably secured to each of said bow members by elements preferably of the glove fastener type. To this end, the bow member' 11 has its under face formed at appropriate intervals with the male members 21 of the fasteners, and the contiguous portion of the lining 2O is provided with the female members Q2 of said fasteners. The bow member 14 also has its under surface provided with male members 23 `of fasteners offthe glove-fas tener type and the contiguous portion of the lining is provided with female members 24 of such fasteners. In order that the intermediate portions of the lining 20 may be detachably secured to the bow members 12 and 13, by -fasteners of the type referrred to,
`without disclosing the presence of said fasteners, the vertical facesof said bow members are provided with male members 25 of the fasteners, and the inner surface of the lining is provided with listing strips marked 27y and 28, which are bendable therefrom to lie against the contiguous vertical faces of the bow members referred to, and are provided with female members 29V of the fasteners.
From the foregoing, the construction and advantages of the present invention will readily be comprehended and it will particularly be noted that the lining will lie smoothly against the bows of the frame and may be quickly and easily applied and will present a most neat and finished appearance, while at the same time it may be readily detached for cleaning or other purposes. It, of course, will be apparent that changes in the details may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subJoined claims.
Having now described the invention, what I believe to be new and desire to secure by IiettersI Patent and what I, therefore, claim, is
1. In an automobile top, the coinbinatioi'i with the frame having transverse roof members, and an outer covering therefor. of an inner lining having transverse listing strips projecting from its inner surface and adapted to lie against approximately vertical faces of the roof members, and means for detachably securing the inner lining to the framemembers, comprising complementary portions which separably engage each other and are carried by the listing strips and contiguous surfaces of the roof members, respectively.
2. In an automobile top, the combina-tion" with the frame having a series of transverse roof members, and an outer covering therefor, of an inner lining engaging the under surfaces of the roof members and spanning the spaces between the same, and means for detachably securing the inner lining detachably to the roof members, comprising a series of fastening elements on the roof members and complementary fastening elements carried by the inner lining, th'efasrenmg elements carried by the lining bein separable from those carried by the roo? members and 4those on the intermediate roof members being disposed on approximately Vertical surfaces of the latter, the inner 1in-- ing having transverse strips which project from its inner `side and lie against said surfaces ot' the intermediate roof members and are provided With those fastening elements which are to engage the corresponding ele- 10 BENJAMIN H.
